John Deere 4010 Rear June 20, 2014 09:33AM
I was wondering if i could get any help here as i have heard that the only way that you can drive a 4010 is to needle the rearend, i am looking to start on a project and would hate to get it running and regret not getting this done if it is truly needed. thanks

it will work for a little while if your just pulling farm type stuff but it will have to be done if you plan on pulling high speed and horsepower

Agreed. It will be fine until you get on a track that causes it to one wheel, then the pinion greats will gall to the cross shaft and it will be impossible to keep inbounds.

Like the others have said, it may work for a little while depending on how much power you are making but eventually the spiders will gall to the cross shaft. When this happens it shears off the bolt that keeps the cross shaft in the housing. Sometimes then the cross shaft will come out of the housing while pulling or just driving around and hit the pto shaft or the lube pump aand cause all kinds of problems. Also once the spiders gall, you will have the cost of new spiders plus the cost of getting the diff needled. I don't know where you are located but I am in Salem, Ohio and could needle that differential for you for $650.00. I also have a 4010 diff here that I could needle and then take yours for a core for the same price.

That is something I may be interested in doing, if I were to send you mine for a core any idea on a time frame of getting that done?

We could have a differential done in 2 weeks.

While you are at it you need to put needles on the sides of your planetary gears. Some on here will say it is not necessary but do it once and do it right.

Yes We can needle the planetaries also for $700.00 per set. Although for someone starting out, I feel that needling the differential is much more important than needling the planetaries.
