Mini rearend advice August 25, 2014 02:56PM
just getting into mini rod pulling. 12 bolt Chevy rearend, should it be a posi rearend, limited slip or completely open rear? What would work best? Thanks

Re: Mini rearend advice August 26, 2014 01:25AM
First off what are you running for a engine and what class? The second thing is don't ever put a posi rear end or limited slip. They will crash you if you break a axle. You will be turned sideways in front of the sled.

Running a na 355 on alcohol

Re: Mini rearend advice August 26, 2014 02:07AM
I wouldn't use a 12 bolt for anything bigger than a small tire small block. And save yourself a lot of grief and have a good needled center section built. Straight runs win. JW

Are you running small tires or big tires? If your running small tires go with a Ford 9 inch. Parts are easy to get and ratios have a larger election that's easy and quick to get.

Who makes a needled ford 9"?

Re: Mini rearend advice September 05, 2014 11:14PM
Been looking around and not having any luck. Who makes a needled 12 bolt open center or does someone make a needle bearing kit for a 12 bolt?

Re: Mini rearend advice September 10, 2014 06:17AM
Anyone havre any info on needling a 12 bolt?

Re: Mini rearend advice September 10, 2014 01:17PM
Forget the 12 bolt!
If you insist on using a car rear end, use a 9" Ford. MUCH easier to work on!
Can get aluminum drop out for it.
Stronger than a 12 bolt.

Is a Dana 60 too heavy?

Re: Mini rearend advice September 07, 2014 12:38PM
We ran a dana 60 in our chassis. Drilled out the welds and removed the steel axles. Made new short tubes out of aluminum. Worked great.

Re: Mini rearend advice September 11, 2014 06:04AM
what gear ratio do they run. thanks

Re: Mini rearend advice September 11, 2014 10:10AM
Depends on which unit you go with. Dana 60 go with a 5.13 if you have a weak gear box; 4.10 with the stron gear box. Dana 80 can use a 5.13, same deal and the rear is lighter and just as durable as a 106. Horst, Cutshall, we used one for a long time, but then we were down on power! 106 basically only has two: 6.20 or 6.80. Ford 9 inch, I don't know. How much horsepower at what level are you contemplating/ What tires are you planning to run? Firestones are easier (and yes, you can be competitive with Firestones) on the drive line. There is a lot of consideration depending on the level you are building for. Ford 9 inch and GM 12 bolt have been gone for a long time in any big tire, good NA motor combo. JW

He seems hung up on the 12 bolt. Must have one in his garage he wants to use.
Good advice Jim!
I would only run a 9" or 12 bolt with n/a, and 31" tires.
34" or 16.1's and Dana 80 or preferably (in my opinion) F106
I have built with what I had before, thinking I was saving money.
In this game, best to spend the money and get the "hot set up" to start with.

Yes I already have a 12 bolt rear. Yes the class is a NA V8 alky class with 31s.
