IH 460 560 March 30, 2009 01:34PM
What is the difference between a 460 and 560 as far as the rear end and center section? Looking at putting a 301 gas into one. How far can you safely bore a 301 out to. Thanks for the imput.

560 is considerably larger and stronger, 460 case (bathtub) is probably 20 to 30% lighter in total wt. Had both empty cases next to each other in my pickup a few years ago, looked like you could almost lay the 460 inside the 560 housing. The 460 has more ring and pinion options, but ground speed can be readily sped up in the constant mesh, as stock high gear is only about .67 of engine speed, in the trans. If running over 500 hp, and there are 1000hp tractors out there running both, a heavy top plate, 1" alum or 1/2" or more steel, will take a lot of the twist out of the case, which is one area of concern. The 460 rears do break, even with the top plates, billet bull gears, billet carriers, and steel reinforcement rings around the bull gears. The 560 is heavier inside the case also, but both should be needled. A long time 560 puller told me the twist in the case is amplified by the lenght of the case, in the torque area, and recommended a steel shaft and support bearings to stabilize the front of the boxes from twisting the rear. If weight is not an issue, the 706 rear has been a proven rear, taking substantially more hp with moderate modifications, and has a good variety of ring gears. Also, are you going to be running heavy and lugging the tractor, or turning a lot of rpm at 5500 lbs or so. Alot of folks broke the 460/560 rears farming, as happened to the first 4010 john deeres, axle strength issue on that one, I believe. Deeply Hooked ran the 656 rear end for years, making gobs of hi-rpm, horsepower, and internally is quite similiar to the 560. A slipper clutch will also lessen the shock on any rear end, and I believe Atlas has been a supplier for the 466 cu in 560ih buildups, with a triple disc set up. Dozens of the llss tractors are still running both boxes, no matter wheather the sheet metal is 5240, mx110, or whatever. Aftermarket gears are a must for durability, but readily available. Very little room for boring the 301, running naturally aspirated, strokers to 450 cubes and larger are discussed on YTM.com, under tractor pulling discussion forum.

I ran a stock block that was sleeved to 4 inch. Since then I have heard of people boring the 301 out to 4 inch for naturally aspirated.Turbo caharged 3.900 ford pistons I have also heard of people running 318 chrysler pistons but dont know the bore size,
