Best Ih LLSS rearend September 13, 2014 02:38AM
I'm in the planning stages of building a llss tractor. Ih 460 sheet metal, dt360 alcohol motor, very light trans, tube chassis. Where I'm up in the air is on the rearend. The 560 rears make me nervous with all the problems they had. I have access to an 806 rearend and trans housing but am not sure if I can lighten it up enough. I have no problem milling the housing out to lighten it up. My local club has a 6500lb limit, but I intend to travel and will have to make a 6000lb limit at times. Trying to keep the tractor as light as possible and have as much moveable weight as possible. Obviously has to be heritage ag based but I am willing to go newer if that is a better option. Light and strong. Options? Thank you in advance.

Since you are just planning I would look into a 885, 895 or maybe one of the maxxum rears, personally I don't know how strong they are but it can't hurt to explore every available option. Your personal wt might be a limitation on a 806, I know they are comparably heavier than the 560 and it takes a significant investment of time to make one work. It can be done but it is difficult enough that I would look into several different options.

I definitely agree with George, as long as your rules say you are allowed to run the dt360 in front of the 895 rear! I went through this along time ago. I was not allowed to run a 360 in front of a 560 rear. I am now allowed to do that. But I had to get billet parts made in order for it to survive. My guess is you'll have to do the same thing in the 895. But at least it will be newer than mine.

Rules are as long as it's a heritage based motor and it came in that color tractor it's good to go. Tube frame and trans will be just over 300lbs and running aluminum sheet metal. My weight? You calling me fat?

Re: Best Ih LLSS rearend September 14, 2014 12:21AM
I don't know you but if you weigh more than 130 then wt of the driver will become a issue with the 806 but hey go for it, just don't forget you were warned.

I was just kidding about calling me fat, but I am well over 130! Add a hundred pounds to that! That's the input I'm looking for so thank you George. Trying to avoid costly mistakes so I'm researching whatever I can. Thanks to all who have responded so far. You have no idea how much I appreciate it.

I'm just kidding George. Thank you for the reply. 130lbs? Add one hundred pounds to that. That's why I'm here, to get input from guys that know. Thank you to all that have replied. I'm trying to avoid costly mistakes while still in the planning phases.

No mater what IH rear you use you will need to run a billet carrier now or later once you start to make some power and hook it to the ground 560 has a stronger trans most running the 656 have went to the pro fab to hold up

Re: Best Ih LLSS rearend September 13, 2014 07:46PM
Yes, the trans will be aftermarket and very light but strong. At this point I see the rearend as the weak link and I would rather spend the time and money to do it right the first time so I can spend more time pulling and less time wrenching.

Re: Best Ih LLSS rearend September 14, 2014 04:13AM
Read my post from last night, tube frame chassis on tractor but the trans will be just over 300lbs, not the chassis. I did not word that well.

If you are going to put a after market trans in, have a good set of bull pinons made and a billet carrier. Should be ready to go in a 560 or 656/666/686, once the work is done both seem to hold up well. One thing about the 560 is the bigger bell housing so you can use a larger clutch disk and easier to get a 4 disk clutch in.

I am running a560 no probs yet but back to the other opts ive worked on several fords and I have a 784 ih trans and rear if it had a profab or a bearing support in the trans it would be nice

Will a 504 or a 544 rearend and transmission work.

I've heard that the 560 rear is actually heavier than the 656. Is this accurate? What size clutch fits in the 560? 11 inch or 12? 656? 666? Thanks guys. Just trying to do this right.

Re: Best Ih LLSS rearend September 16, 2014 10:44AM
I have been told that the 656 is the way to go with a 350 center section. The 350 center section is not casted for the live hydraulic pump and is much lighter. You have to run a smaller flywheel with the 656 or 350 center section. Degenhardts ran that setup in their old tractor. They ran lss and hssd with the 656 rear end and 350 center section. I think they even pushed that setup with 3 turbos. So whatever clutch they ran would hold the power you should make. I was even told that they had stock gears in that tractor with the constant mesh changed to speed it up. Just my .02, good luck with the build! Beer
