Cummins crank in sbjd February 28, 2015 12:58AM
Ive been searching for weeks, and coming up empty handed. Sorry if its already been covered. Im looking for info on what is required to put a cummins crank in a SBJD. Ive heard it can be done, but have not been able to find info on what it takes. Im looking at a 466 out of an 8820 combine and I was thinking about running the 8.9 crank in it. Will one of the later blocks be better to start with- 7.6 or 8.1? Does it matter which 8.9 crank you use? ISL? QSL? Do you keep the Deere rods? The goal would be to run up to 637 with 4.875 pistons and run in a 3000 rpm P-Pump class. Help??

Does not matter on the 8.9 crank ISL Or QSL the same. You may be better with a 8.3 for stroke reasons. You have to watch when using a Cummins crank as the bore spacing is a little different for a John Deere and your rods will not line up correctly in the John Deere block. Hope that helps some.

Why would the 8.3 crank be better? I would have to stroke it to get to the 5.69" stroke of the 8.9 crank. Are they dimensionally different aside from stroke? Do you offset bore to compensate for the difference in bore spacing? Aren't the main journals bigger? Do you just line bore to account for that? What about durability- is this a good train of thought, or would I be better off just stroking the 466 crank?

you need the 8.1 block,it has bigger mains to start with, the main bolts are to close on a 466 block, no problem on rods, piston boss needs to be wider. crank will need to be turned .010 to jd rod. the stock cummings crank is metric and is smaller than stock jd std rod bearing. bore out jd timming gear, front cover and rear seal quill can be machined to use cummings seals
