4020 pulling tractor April 23, 2009 02:14AM
I have a 4020 John Deere pulling tractor. I am wanting to put a 7 1/2 gear made out of two pto gears in it. If anyone has any parts number for pto gears or any info at all?????

Call Mike Draxxler-He did ours in a 4010. Worked really well. He probably has the gears there to do it. 715-781-3687.

You can use the factory 4020 parts, or I believe the 4320 gears may be a little wider. You cut the center of the 32T gear thats on the front of the countershaft to fit the countershaft where the 6/8 gear goes. If you want to keep 8th you also need to cut the 2/5 gear off the countershaft & match the PTO gear to that. Then you cut the factory teeth off the pinion shaft gear that you want to replace & fit the 30T PTO gear that comes on that shaft to the hub you made. Cut/drill some groves for dowel pins in the seams if you want a little insurance, then weld up the seams & reassemble.

FYI - if you flip the 30T & 32T the other way you get 7-1/4. If you know you won't be able to get into 8th you can put 7-1/4 in the 2/5 slot & 7-1/2 in the 6/8 slot to have 3 nicely spaced gears.

I mounted a grinder onto the tool post of an old lathe to make the cuts, but it can probably be done with carbide tooling too. That probably wouldn't be as messy & would probably be faster.

BTW, Unless you have access to a lathe & consider your labor free, a set of gears from Atlas Tractor may be less expensive. A while back I think he had a set of 7-1/2 on the shelf too.
