What is the best way to speed up a 4430 quad range
Running a hot farm 466 class

You can either put 4010 finals on it or you can put gears in the 2 speed that will make low direct (same as high now) and high overdrive. I think Deere discontinued the gear you need though so you will have to find a used set. The planet gears flip, you just need new input and output gears.

Question for Deere Puller- I showed this thread to a JD mechanic friend of mine and he would like to know exactly what gears need to be replaced. He is helping me with my 4430 and I would like to do this to my tractor. Got any part #s for the gears needed?

JD Parts online is showing the same parts for 30, 40, 50, & 55 series so I think you would need to find an old paper book or microfiche. I would start by comparing the 30 series to the 50 & 55.

You're going to flip around R58624 and replace AR81327 & AR81329 with what you find in the newer model that still uses R58624.

Hope this helps, sorry that I don't have the numbers for you.

Thanks. This gives us a place to start and what to look for.

You are probably wasting your time. Flipping the 2 speed is a 27% gear change that is nearly 4-1/2 teeth of IH gear change. It is unlikely you will be able to pull that much gear, and I am confident if you have the power to run that much gear the 4430 trans isn't going to like it any.

I think speeding up the 2 speed is easier on the transmission than going to faster final drives . That is that I did and the transmission held up fine . I was told it was the same as a 540 pto verses 1000 pto .

4455 deere what did you all change in you 2 speed? I'm looking for faster ground speed in a 4430 as well.

Easiest thing is to go to the junk yard and get a complete two speed out of a 4440. There is a serial number break I think around 47200 that you need to be aware of.

What gear and weight class are you running?
I have to agree with KTA on this one having broke a 4430 trans myself pulling road gear with a similar setup. Never had trouble with clutches, but the trans couldn't take it. If you want to split your lower gears differently for mph classes the trans won't complain so much.

4455 Deere is correct, speeding up the 2 speed is easier on the trans, but with enough power/torque it will still shell parts out.

So would a 55 series 2 speed be faster than a 40 series?

Re: Speed up 4430 rearend July 09, 2015 02:48AM
I agree the the easiest way is to find a used 4440 2 speed . If you want to just change your 4430 over I have the 2 gear you need . I went to a crower and sold most of my 2 speed parts .

same problem
So would a 55 series 2 speed be faster than a 40 series?

No, there are only two different speed sets under/direct and direct/over. The 55 series is most likely a helical gear set, I think the consensus is to stick with the straight cut gears. 40 and 50 series would most likely have a straight set of gears. The planet gears are the same as 30 series just flipped around and the two sun gears are the same tooth counts of course, but the clutch drive shell is welded on the other gear when compare to the under/direct gear set.

Karl at Atlas should be able to set you up with gears that use the 4430 (underdrive) input gear with new planet gears and new output gear to get an overdrive that is about half of the jump that the factory setup has. I know he ran several sets a few years ago.
