Stan, not trying to sound smart, but i would look at JD 4000. ( which is basically a 3020 rear mated to a 4020 front) this would give you a real good start. It would easily except a 466 and it will give you a hood long enough to cover it. Just my two cents.

^^^ I agree with G Man. It will be a bear swapping into a 3020 compared to a 4000, 4010, or 4020. Perhaps if you found a parts 40xx tractor, you would be able to use that front end with the 3020 rear like he suggested. Also, make sure you know which 466 motor you're getting. Different sized bolt holes for engine mounts to frame, and different water pump setups among other things.

G Man, Not trying to sound smart, but a 4000 is a 4020 rear end with a unique final drive that had a outer end axle diameter of a 3020. No 3020 parts in a 4000. That why the 4000 is included in the 4020 parts book that shows same internal parts as a 4020 including the transmission case.

^^ That's what I was thinking... because isn't the 3010/3020 rear end the same that was used on the 4030 tractors with the smaller engines??!! the 4000.10.20's were 3-3/8" axles as well.

Stan, The 466 engine will bolt directly to the 3020 clutch housing but, I will tell you from experience if you build any kind of horsepower it will twist the top transmission shaft off .Been there done that with a 414 in a 4030 that has the same caliber rear end as a 3020. I built a custom top shaft then plucked D range gear teeth of like kernels off a cob. Your best bet is a 4010 rear end and figure out how to cut weight elsewhere. Good Luck. DW

I was thinking 3010 /3020 rear was the same as 540 skidder but the trans is were my problem will be 466 /a pump 3 LM turbo at 3000 rpm . 400 hp ????? Referring to 540 because there were many of them used on single engine mods and the held up good

At 6000# with18.4x38 tires and a box 3LM466 the tranny has a prayer of lasting, but you also shouldn't have problems making weight with a 4010 rear and gears, input shaft, and good rear end parts are much easier to find for the 4010/4020.
