Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 November 29, 2015 03:12PM
Asking for info and help on how to build more HP from a Perkins 354 in a white 2-110. Have read up on some ways to do so in other older forums. Have never conversed with anyone on it though. Would like to talk with anyone willing to help. Thank you in advance.

You need to get contact with the Prewitt Pulling Team in Kentucky they are the authority on the Perkins engine.

A big way to do it is to find and put on a 1006 head from a 365 Perkins. It helps with airflow A LOT

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 November 30, 2015 04:19AM
is this 365 head a DOT 4 head? or would it work on a DOT 4 engine?

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 November 30, 2015 04:21AM
There are differences between the 1006 and Dot4 head. The Dot4 head is better than a non-Dot4 but from what I've head the 1006 (365) head is the best starting point.

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 November 30, 2015 10:48AM
since you have a white 2-110 that should mean you already have a dot 4 engine. There are differences between a dot 4 head and a early 1006 head.
late 1006 engines 97 and newer ( or build code YG ) have 12 port heads but you have to change cam etc. etc.

depending on what kind of power you want? On the outside of the engine i would recomend a roosa master pump with a 450 head and .120 lines and 4x18 injectors.
The roosa master pump can be built with a stanadyne housing with a 3 bolt hub to bolt right in place of the cav pump

a bosch VE pump with a 14mm head and 4mm cam plate could also be an option ( just need it built to run counter-clockwise though )

for turbo S300 would probably be good for it

hope this helps Jason E.

what pump you got and what are you asking for it i got 354 may want to put it on
724 301 2194 cell
1800 466 6515 work

Thanks Jason. Do you run this combo? Or have you built this combo?

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 November 30, 2015 02:10PM
im more of a 1006 guy i have built them with A-pumps mostly but i have delt with the 354. Im currently building a AT6354.4 out of a 750 combine to put in a F-450 lol

The reason the 850 engine is 175 hp vs 155 hp on the 750 is because it uses a water to air intercooler

im not familiar with the marine engines that much. I have heard of the 200hp and 240hp versions but i doubt the difference is in the head
its probably more in the fuel and turbo system

if your engine does not have lips at the top of the sleeves then i would recomend a copper head gasket
putting in studs never hurts but you can usually get by without them those little motors have plenty of bolts for their size

I would torque the head more than the factory spec though I always torque pulling engines in steps of 60 80 100 110 120 ft lbs
( i think 85 is factory spec for torque )

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 November 30, 2015 12:44PM
That's been mostly what I've read. I've heard Bosch be is more reliable and less finicky. What I've seen is to get a Massey 850 combine head. And what I've read is that motor was 175 HP factory. Must flow more? Bigger valves? Curious.... Is there anything marine side of things to be used? They usually show 200-240 ....I understand its also intercooled but do they run more fuel or better head or turbo ? The s300 turbo .....are you getting that off a stock Cummins truck ? Is there any worry about lifting head? Should I use head studs?

How do I contact them in Kentucky? Phone? Email?

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 November 30, 2015 12:47PM
What kind of power should I see? What are you guys running and seeing for HP numbers?

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 November 30, 2015 01:19PM
I'm in the process of building one now. I have a Rossamaster with a 450 head.

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 November 30, 2015 01:55PM
Is that all you've done is pump so far?

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 November 30, 2015 02:13PM
not sure on HP numbers btw. never got a chance to go dyno it

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 November 30, 2015 03:03PM
Just transplant a Hercules 478 into your 2-110. More power in a lighter weight tractor than normal. Think there has been more done with 478 in pulling than a 354.

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 December 01, 2015 04:56AM
A 5.9 cummins transplant would work well too

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 December 01, 2015 05:23AM
The 8.4 Sisu would be the biggest engine to transplant. Makes good power too. Depending on your rules it shouldn't be an issue.

Would like to power HP the Perkins. I know it can be done and has been done. Was asking who has done what to build up and what kind of numbers are seen. I know it can be re-powered with any engine but would like to build the Perkins. Anymore help/advice/tips would be appreciated. Thanks again in advance.

Would like to power up the perkins

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 December 03, 2015 12:07PM
What class are you wanting to run with it? I have a Perkins that I'm running in an 1130 Massey. CDS 450 roosa with CDS 6-18 John Deere injectors, S300turbo off an 8.1 Deere, 1006 ported and polished head on a 354. Lots of power for farm stock class, not enough to play with bigger cube open tractors with the same goodies. Makes around 500 horse. I am in the process of putting an A pump on the block that the head came off now to run in a 5700# 3000rpm class. I threw around the idea of trying the 14mm ve pump but it turned out to be cheaper to build the inline pump. P.S. If your class doesn't allow water, find a set of 354.2 rods to put in your 354.4 engine. It will double oil the Pistons and help keep them a little coolerWinking nobody likes burnt pistons, lol. Have Fun!

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 December 03, 2015 12:34PM
I forgot one other thing too. I yanked the sleeves out of the 354 and put a set of Dt 361 IH Pistons in it. Had to bore the block around .062 or so and fire ring it but it put the cubic inch up to 401. I would recommend itif you ever burn a few pistons in your pulling tractor

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 December 03, 2015 03:17PM
massey man how are you coming along putting that A-pump on the 1006?

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 December 03, 2015 03:19PM
I meant massey farming not massey man .. my bad

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 December 03, 2015 11:15PM
Well, right now they are sitting on the same pallet. I haven't pulled the front cover off the engine to enlarge the mounting hole yet. Any pointers?

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 December 04, 2015 06:17AM
its pretty straight forward except you cannot just bolt the pump to the timing gear housing because the rack cap will hit the housing where the water pump gear goes
so I made a 3/4 inch spacer plate . doing this will also keep the gear from being pushed to far forward .. also be sure to support the back of the pump that's a lot of added weight on a cast aluminum housing

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 December 07, 2015 08:14AM
Pulling the tractor in the stock class. 10,500# 12,500#. White 2-110, able to run 18.4-38, 3000 rpm limit. So what would you suggest to do to get started? Maybe shoot for 200-250 maybe more HP ? Is the roosa with 450 head too much?

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 December 07, 2015 08:39AM
If the classes you mentioned have a speed limit 10 mph or less OR a cubic inch limit less than 400, you will probably be fine with 250-300 HP. However, if you are pulling against 4430's and 1066's you will need more than 500 hp to compete. Even at 12 MPH you will need 4-500 HP in my area. I should also add that even with 500+ HP a 354 will never have the same torque as a 404 JD or 414 IH. Not trying to discourage the White, but depending on the class, you might as well stuff an 8.3L cummins in there and call it a 160 or something. Good Luck!

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 December 07, 2015 10:39AM
No speed limit....not allowing aluminum wheels....so its harder for those tractors to make 10,500 but can start the 12,500.....so hopefully in time can make it build HP.... If not can always do the 5.9 because its a factory replacement engine and thats allowed....

Re: Ways to make more power from Perkins 354 December 07, 2015 11:58AM
at 3000 rpm a 5.9 wont do any better than the perkins aginst the 1066s because most of them will be running DT466 engines
in a limited rpm class torque is the key regardless of speed limit. and displacement = torque
