I have a 856 ih with a stock 407.Would I be better off building the 407,or trying to find a 400 series to build for a 540 ci limit,p pump,3x3 turbo,open rpm hot farm class? Any help greatly appreciated.

I just like the old 407's, so I'll say build it! I see too many 706's-856's w/ swapped in 466's. You can build an old 407 to 540 cubes fairly easy. I have mine out to 466 cubes, the limit for our class. Sure, its probably gonna cost a lil more to build the older 407, but I want to do something a lil different. I hope to get mine from the machine shop this week & start putting it together!

Check the casting # off your 407 block, you'll have a decent block to work with as long as it isn't a C1 block.

A C2 block will do. C3 would be better, and a C4 is ideal. C1's aren't worth the time. I'm currently using a C3 block that was a replacement block, was in a 1256.

Visual difference between the C1 and the C2,3, and 4 is the biggest thing. On C1 407 blocks, there are 5 recessed areas on the injection pump side of the block. It makes it look like you can see the bore of the sleeves. I guess IH had a recall on the C1 blocks at one time, I've never been able to pinpoint what it was, but it evidently wasn't mandatory, as I have a C1 in one of my own tractors, and have seen several other C1 blocks still in service. I think it may have had something to do w/ either the deck of the blocks, or cracking on the injection pump side of the block. From what I've been told by other guys running 407 engines, the webbing inside the blocks seems to be heavier in the C2 & C3 blocks versus a C1 block. I also believe the nickel content was increased in the iron. C4's are basically the same as a C3, but were used to note that the engine had the 1.625 wristpin connecting rods in 1456's and early 915 combines.

would you like to buy a complete 540 in a 1066?. its got a gt42 3x3 already on it, but a rotary on it. just asking. willing to sell just the motor.

I know 540 cubes is fairly easy to do, don't know how much bigger one can really go, I don't think there's much room to go any larger bore than 4 5/8". Never tried it, yet!

I will have to bore this block regardless.# 6 cylender is in pretty bad shape.It swallowed the sleeve on that hole.Probably will go 4 5/8. what kind of pistons would you use? do you run sleeves or just the block when you go that big? thank you very much.

I use a 4 5/8" piston for a 2290 or 2294 Case. The Case pistons use a 1.625" wristpin, so you'll need the big pin 407 rods from a 1456 or early 915 high profile combine. You'll have to have the valve reliefs re-cut in the pistons, and you'll have to run the Case pistons w/ the arrows pointing towards the rear of the block. You'll also need the pistons cut on the bottoms to clear the camshaft. No sleeves, just bore the block. You'll want to consider a custom head gasket & having the block or head o-ringed. You may want to consider having the water jackets in the block filled for strength.

Thanks for sharing this type of info. So much on these sites (not just this one)... it's all a bunch of garbage and often very hard to sift out the truth and a good post that you can really LEARN something from. THIS is one of the LATTER.
