Mechanical hydraulic steering March 05, 2016 02:48PM
I am building a mechanical hydraulic steering for my pulling tractor. I am using a 2.5 inch double ended cylinder. What helm pump/motor are you pullers using. The stock steering was 3 turns lock to lock. I would like to at least be under 5.

What is the 2.5 dimension you are referring to, the body of the cylinder?

I have seen a few setups where the cylinder is 1.5" rod (2.5" body), use a 2.4 cu in helm and you are in the balpark of the 5 turns max you're after. Of course this depends a little on the length of your steering arms at the spindle as that changes the mechanical leverage which equates to cylinder travel and force at the steering wheel.

Surplus Center has the type of cylinder I'm talking about.......

That is the cylinder I am using. The steering arms are the Stock IH. I will check surpluscenter for a pump/motor. Thanks
