404/466 Bolt Directly to 2510/2520 ? April 09, 2016 06:09AM
Will a JD 404 or 466 bolt directly to the bellhousing of a 2510 / 2520? What else do I need to know to make a successful conversion, if it is practical. 600 to 800 horsepwoer will be plenty. Thanks for your kind help.

If this has been discussed previously, sorry I have missed the posts.

Nope, 2510/2520 use a smaller clutch housing than the 3020/4020. You could get any of the 300 series engines (3, 4 or 6 cylinder) to bolt in using the correct bell housing adapter. I'm not sure the trans could even handle 600 hp. You could start with a 3020, but being its basically the same trans I doubt it would take it well.

The 2510 having some common parts (gears and shafts) as a 3020 and 4030 transmissions, I can tell you from actual been there done that experience, that these transmissions in stock form, that 400 HP will pluck the teeth right out of this small gear box. When it was not eating gears it was breaking bearing quills and twisting off transmission and clutch shafts. It can be used/done but plan on a custom clutch shaft, transmission top shaft, counter shaft and all gears. which are not readily available like to larger 4010 and 4020 transmissions. Didn't need a 466 to do this either just a mildly fueled up 414. Good Luck, DW

Valuable advise. Thank you so much guys. I'll scrap that idea.

DW, I use to operate a 2520D with JD's new synchronous thinner that sensed the direct seeded young cabbage plants and then activated the arm hydraulically that wiped out the excess plants. That unit required a lot of fine tuning for the precison spacing and patience. It worked well. Also used the 2520 to pull JD precison planter for planting vegetable seeds on several hundred acres.Loved that 2520.
