Component rearend options September 22, 2016 12:33PM
Looks like most component tractors or maybe all of them run sqhd third members. It also seems in trucks anymore 20-145 is most popular. Why is this exactly? Is there any reason not to use a 20-145 third member in a tractor.

The 20-145 is a touch heavier than the SQHD.
I would use the 20-145 for a tractor, just because the OEM aluminum pig is much more reasonably priced.
Ring and pinions are somewhat more expensive.
Also, if you can get the salvage yard to work with you, the 17-145 housing is lighter than the 20-145. And the 20-145 pig fits the 17-145 housing.
The 17-145 is the 17,000 lb rated rear, the 20-145 rear, is the 20,000 rated rear. Sorta like the old S-100 was a 17,000 rating.
TRB makes an aluminum pinion bearing housing, since even the aluminum pig on the 20-145 comes with the steel housing for the pinion bearings.

I have both aluminum and steel third members for 20-145 and plan was to just do a sheetmetal housing even though I do have stock housings. I'm not sure if I trust the aluminum one myself. They seem to be fine in gas trucks but they don't hold up in diesel trucks. I will most likely just use the steel one. I had planned to call the trb for the parts since they stock 20-145 differentials.

There are many thousands of the aluminum housings holding up very nice in diesel trucks!
Many in high horsepower diesel trucks.
I work at a truck salvage yard, and don't see very many aluminum housings torn up at all.
Except the ones that run out of lube!
If you make a sheet metal housing, be SURE to put cap supports in, for the side bearing caps!

I'm talking about 20-145 aluminum 3rd member in diesel pulling trucks not over the road trucks. I've seen a bunch of broken ones so I don't see how they would hold up any better in a tractor.

If you have all the answers, why even ask the question?
Semi pulling trucks, and modified or component SS tractors are worlds different!
The tractors using planetaries with 4 or 4.6 to one gear reduction, reduces stress on the center section, oh, about 4 times! Maybe 4.6 times.
Haven't looked under many semi's to pay attention to what they are running.
Mack rears are popular in Minnesota.
No idea why a semi person would use an aluminum pig in a 20,000 lb. truck. Not like they need to lose weight in the rear.
Some 20-145 have no "rub bolt" for the ring gear, like the SQHD had, so you may need to add one of those as well.
Steel pig, or aluminum.

Not sure how you got pulling semi out of pulling trucks. Guess this isn't a place to get a topic going to grow the sport Ill just go elsewhere

Figured if you were seeing them break, they were in a semi.
Good luck trying to " grow the sport" sport.
