Wednesday's Update....Tomah UMDF Auction June 10, 2009 06:25AM
Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to remind everyone that this year at Tomah, there will be a live auction during the Thursday evening puller's dinner. Alan Washburn has offered to auctioneer the event! This adds new excitement to the event, because I'm confident that Alan will do a wonderful job and keep us all entertained!!! I've contacted serveral vendors, sponsors and pulling-related businesses, which has led to lots of nice donations to be auctioned off! This auction is to raise awareness and funds for the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF) which has reached out to help many families with children diagnosed with mitochondrial disease like Bud, Leslie and Miranda Gettinger. "Miranda the Panda" was diagnosed last fall with this disease after two years of battling many different severe symptoms, most of which relate to her organs - lungs, eyes, etc. The Gettingers reached out to the UMDF for information, resources and support since this isn't a condition that many people (even many doctors) are familiar with!

Mitochondrial disease is a very serious condition and a 'tough row to hoe' for those affected by it. The UMDF works very hard at spreading awareness for the disease, as well as raising funds to put toward research. The UMDF receives no funding from the federal government at this time. This organization is trying to put the disease "on the map" so others in the medical field, government and community know about it!

Currently, this disease takes LOTS of time to diagnose. For instance, Bud & Leslie Gettinger's daughter, Miranda, was 2 years old before they could finally put a name to her illness. But 2 years is a relatively short amount of time compared to other families. The UMDF is working hard to make it so that it doesn't have to be that way. They also offer tons of resources, support and information to the families affected by Mitochondrial Disease.

By participating in this auction, you would be contributing to an excellent cause. For those of you who personally watched the Gettingers struggle to find out WHAT was CAUSING Miranda's problems, I'm sure you would agree that you would never want to see another family go through that!

As I said before, there are several nice auction items which have all been donated by pulling-related businesses, vendors and sponsors.
