Component Chassis October 26, 2016 02:39AM
Just wondering what people thought. Looking at building a lite super chassis. Do most run the motor and rear end parallel with the bottom frame rail and tip the whole tractor down on angle towards the front or do they tip the motor up and run the bottom rail parallel with the ground? Just wondering if there is some science here on this? A component chassis of course.

From what i have seen, most put the crankshaft in the middle [top to bottom] of the frame rails. But it is your build, do what you think will preform best. Good Luck on your build. Should be fun.

I recommend reading any of the national level rulebooks. There are specifications for chassis regarding those questions.

There are specs in the book as in the amount of fall you can have front to back but just curious if tipping the rear is beneficial or not.

Centerline of the crankshaft must be parallel within 2 degrees in relationship to the ground.
2 degrees equals 7/16" per foot. This equals approx. four inches of fall from center of rear axle to the 114" wheelbase point.
This is from NTPA SS rules, Component Chassis, #16, d. Page 50 from 2016 rule book.
Same section, letter f. Crankshaft centerline to be between top and bottom rail of frame.
