What would be a good rearend and transmission for the ky light hot farm rules? And what would be the ideal gear to run? And one more for those that don't know this is a out of the box 3lm class,399 cubes and smaller can run a p pump at 3500rpm and 480 cubic in tractor run a 10 mm A pump at 3000rpm, if they alow 1% over on cubes witch I thought I read in the 6.7/5.9 cummins tread, what motor would be better 401 at 3500 rpm or the 474 motor at 3000 rpm? Sorry for the long post but I would like to build one to add color to the class and I know fery little about ford tractors. THANKS! |

If it helps you, we are running 22:1, 21:1, and 20:1 ratios on our 3 speed transmissions. Would love to see a BLUE one in the class. Good Luck. |

Thanks Richard I'll use all the help I can get. Can someone explain to me how to get them ratios on a ford. Or explain to me how to figure them? THANKS |

Richard I'm guessing them ratios are for 3000 rpm tractor and not the 3500? |

Yes. We run IH 466 engines at 3000rpm |

4000 or 5000 rear is what i would use. 456, 474, 478 are good engine options above the 400ci/3000 rule or go with a 5.9 below that for 3500... Bryan Lively - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I think a ford would dominate in this class if I was thinking of building a ford I would contact Travis Gordon from Fairfield ky or mike wilhite of cox's creek ky and see if these guys would help you out ! |

Bryan there was just a 1 percent tollorence put on the 399 rule to allow the 401 ford and case To the guy wanting to build a ford a person in Wesconcin has a good start he pulls big blue llss and has a 5000 rear with lots of work already done and priced right someone on here should be able to help with the contact its abou 20 pages back on the for sale page if the big engines are running 20 to 23 to one gears on a smaller engine I would want mine slower to let the rpms work 23 would probably be my fast gear |

Bryan i have one question if you limit the class with a box 3lm turbo why wont they allow a p-pump, b/c even a good rotary for a red tractor has to be turned down to keep from over fueling such a small turbo, so to keep the cost down why not allow a p-pump ,and to give longivity. |

Because a 401 could easily be a 456, 474, or 478 Lewis.
P-pump allowed on the 399cid and less and 10mm A's on the 400-480 Ford Tractor Bryan Lively - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

So are you allowing a 1% over or not. And why wont you alow a p pump on the 400-480 if the other pump hAve to back the fuel off? Just trying to save a little bit more mony for the class |

What would you be saving money on with a p pump? |

Bryan that wasn't me. I'm back on my meds and trying not to start something LOL And they did just add the 1 percent over to allow the 401 to run under the 399 rule |

478 truck motor....I wasn't aware of the 1% tolerance change, I am obviously out of the loop at this point. I won't make any further comment on this thread. Thank you. Bryan Lively - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

474 is the truck motor... 7.8L (bore 4.4", stroke 5.2" = 474.4 cu in) sometimes called a Brazilian Ford. there is no 474 tractor motor only a truck motor. there is no 478 truck motor or tractor motor from Ford or New Holland. the 401 456 and 474 all look different but many/most parts interchange |

The 474 was also used in combines |

Ford tractor... There is a 1% tolerance added to the cubic inch limits. This was added to maybe help get more color in the class. We had a puller looking at ford with 401 engine for the class. A 1% tolerance is somewhat standard in most classes. Bryan and I talked today about the class. Good luck with your project. |

I wonder if someone smarter than me could tell me if a 401 is actually 401 cube a technical person once told me that the ford's were actually only 399 then you don't need your 1 percent |

can a 5000 with a 401 make the weight with 5 or 600 to spare or do you think I will have to use a 4000? |

I not a Ford guy, I really don't know, I do know the guys that are considering the ford builds are planning to use a 4000 / 5000 rear. Lewis or Bryan may know. |

Use a 4000 if you're looking for the most moveable weight possible with a Ford. If you look to move up classes in the future I would use a 5000 though the 4000 is perfectly fine for Light Hot Farm. Bryan Lively - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Will a 5000 transmission bolt up to the 4000 rearend? Does anybody have heavy parts for the 4000 or would the have to be custom made, or can I use parts from a 5000 in the 4000? |

Another question is what other tractors are the same rear and transmission as a 5000? Thanks |

All the 8 speed 4 cylinder fords are very similar parts wise |

No it won't bolt up.
Best to use a gearbox in a 4000 housing. |

Anyone wanting to build a Deere should call Paul Marlet. He has the perfect setup chassis for this class. It's for sale. |
