Want to build a 4020/4320 puller January 25, 2017 01:23PM
Hi everyone, I have always been around pulling and finally am wanting to buy a tractor to start pulling. I have access to buy either a 4020 or 4320. I don't want to just pull them as stock tractors or with a turned up pump. So my question is how do I got the most amount of power out of one of these to tractors. Anything helps, even a point in the right direction, I'm not asking you to help build my tractor for me, just a little push start. Thank you everyone.

The 4020 is a power shift transmission and the 4320 is a synchro.

Many different rules and classes.I watched a very nice 806 sell in Grand Junction Iowa that was a 3000 RPM A pump unit and it brought around $27K.The man that built is was there and was very sharp and He told me it would take 3X that to build it.I had a friend who has since past that bought a nice tractor from me that he pulled and had a lot of fun and then decided to to go Super Farm and the fun stopped.Another friend that still pulls told me he made close to million dollars pulling but started with 2.Its similar to restoring a car easier to buy what you want.I saw a car on BarrettJackson supposedly had $700K spent and brought a little over $100K.

Now that you've told us what kind of class you want to pull in, the 30 series and up with the A pump would be the better option, since some of the classes in that area require stock appearing pump for the tractor model. Your initial post sounded like you wanted to pull a basically stock tractor, maybe cranked up to 3-400 hp. Now you are talking about a 1000+ hp class lol!

Looking back at my original post I can see where you are getting that. Maybe a 30,40, or 50 series tractor would be a better starting spot you are saying? Something with an inline pump? How would I get all the ponys out of that motor? Head and cam work? Inline P-Pump and injectors? Obviously more as well.

Ryan 68 I don't know if it really sold but that was final bid.There was a lot of interest and it was nice .Builder said it still had a few bugs to work out as it had only been pulled 8 times.It was a 466 and they thought it could do 800H.P.but I don't know how much power it takes in that class.Very well could still be in shop as the guy that owned it said they had had a lot of fun.

Just keep in mind that you will spend more money on a competitive green tractor than a red one. (depending on class) Lots of stock parts available for red that will work in pulling.

I am located in south central wisconsin. I am looking to pull in a 466 hot farm class or a 11,000 lb altered farm class.

All 4320's are syncro-range, and that would be the tractor I'd choose to build for farm class pulling.

This topic comes up on here every so often and I give my view. Number one you won't keep up with the 466 A-pump tractors red or green with the 404 and rotary pump. I remember injpumped was giving me pointers on a rotary pump build years ago. We ran a well built pump with a 404 on our 4320 for years. We could run a gear higher than any other 4320 that we ran against unless it was set up like ours then it was tire difference etc. We could never touch a 1066 with their built pumps and truck motors. We could run with the other 806-1206 etc with the same style pump as the 4320. In our area of Pa. there are some strong running 4440's,50 and 55 series tractors that are basically pro-farm type tractors. If I were to do over I would look at a 55 series tractor if you are going to be a serious puller. If my 4320 didn't have only 5000 original hours I would've put a 55 series motor and A-pump in it. There are some deals on the classified page too. If I were in Wisc. like you I would give Don Slama a call. I had talked to him several years ago about a Super Farm. Nice informative guy. Injpumped is good too if you want to stay with the original pump. Remember no matter how much you spend you will always be beatable. I've been involved in pulling since 1976 and have seen it all- I think. Have fun and let us know what you build.

Thank you for that response. I have been wondering that as well (keeping up to a 466 with a 404) I have thought about going to red way and buying a 1466 of the green route and buying a 4450 or 4440. Im a die hard green guy so it would be hard for me to buy a red tractor. Thank you for your response and information. No mater what route I end up going I am definitely going to build something.
