Actual rpm's in a 15 second pull. Just a thought February 07, 2017 05:28AM
I was having a conversation with a friend this morning about Motorsports and he brought up the fact of how few revolutions a dragster motor makes in a 3 second run and it made me think about how few there would be in a 15 second hook if we come off the line at 5000 and maintain that for 15 seconds that is only 1250 revolutions under load just curious if that is considered buy engine builders. Think about the maintenance on a grand national puller with so few revs
Just a thought something new to talk about thanks

I think a builder typically builds to find maximum power from a reliability to cost ratio. Meaning you can have a lot of power, you can have longevity, and you can have it cheap... but you can't have all three! I would like to know how much longer a 3000 rpm motor would last vs. 5000 rpm. With basically the same set up other than the obvious things (like cam etc.) to run higher rpms. Or maybe even stock vs 3000 rpm?

We run a 3000 rpm pro farm tractor and in a lot of ways these low rpm torque monsters are considerably harder on parts than an open rpm engine making the same horse power levels largely because the crank, rods, pistons etc. spend so much longer in the power stroke than they do at higher speeds. These engines are making in excess of 4000 ft/lb torque at below 3000 rpm that is some serious stress on parts. If you take 3000 rpm and hold it down the track for that same 15 second run you are only making 750 revolutions of the engine during that same pull.

I never would have thought of that! So really a 466 will outlast a 640 because of less stroke and an open rpm 466 should outlast a 3000rpm 466. But what about stock boost levels for example? Same out come?

I'm looking to put together either an ih dt466 with water inj., 3x3, p pump , no intercooler, for a 10,000 pound hot farm or a 600-640 cubic inch water inj, 3 x ? Turbo, intercooler, p pump motor , for a 11,000 pound pro farm. Looking for a persuasive argument one way or the other as far as reliability and cost to build each with similar good parts? Also approximately how many hooks with each setup before a tear down?

Forgot to mention, both classes are 3000rpm

money and reliability in my opinion would tell 466 and spin the heck out of it.

A open rpm 466 with a 3x3 will run with or in many times out perform a 640 with a 3x3. Not trying to start a debate several places run them together the proof is in the results.
