I have a 560 with a 301 bored to 310. It is on alcohol and I am looking for an ignition system for it. Just wondering if anyone has adapted some kind of vertex mag or using another form of ignition. Looked at an msd 10 and 8 series but these are for v-8 applications only. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

MSD 8s and 10s work just fine on 6 cyls. The vertex mag would be excellent also.

Thanks for the input, I called msd today and the tech rep thought the 8 system might work but the rev limiter function may not work properly. I thought I had remembered seeing these systems on alky tractors in the past but couldnt recall. Thanks for the insight.

We use an 8 but unplugged the softtouch rev limiter.

i have seen and used the msd 7al-2 ign. box with a stock disributor that has been up graded with the after market electronic ign.
works great.

Since it would be on a 6 instead of an 8, you wouldn't use a 7k chip to limit it at 7k. it would be a lower number I believe.

Yes crutch the msd rep said it would change it by 1/4, like for example a 4000 rpm chip would limit at 5000 rpm on a 6 cyl.
At least that was how they explained it to me.

It should limit at 4/3 = 1.333 times the face value of the chip. ie 4000 chip will limit at 5333. If you want to limit at 6000 you need a 4500 chip.

It's really limiting the pulses / min & the 8 has 4 pulses / rev versus 3 pulses / rev for the 6.

4000 x 4 = 16000 pulses / min.

16000 / 3 = 5333 RPM

Are you turbocharged or N/A .? I use the 8 box with a ford dist. and it works fine . if you are N/A all you need is the 6 box or a mag . I have 2 vertex mags if you are interested . 270-576-7308
