Oil April 30, 2017 05:59AM
We have some Kendal oil and some Cen Pe Co oil left over from previous years but not enough of either for a complete fill, is it ok to mix them together? Both 20W-50 in a hot farm tractor.

Additives in the oil are very highly totally different. Certainly can be uncompatible. Undesirable acids can soon by eating on your once nice expensive parts. In due time, you will have a mess, likely very expensive, to deal with.

You better phone a very qualified oil chemist to discover the real truth to your question.

Better yet ask your neighbor if his 800 thousand mile pete has ever had a gallon or two added here and there of whatever oil he could get his hands on theres been millions of gallons mixed since the model a ford and you or your hot farm wont last long enough for the acid in the oil to eat anything up just stay away from any oil with acid in it and be sure not to drop the oil plug in the bucket you will loose your hand if you reach in after it I no the Kendal mixes good with Delo. Shell. and Brad Pen Although that Cen pe co could be some bade stuff

You will be just fine. The only thing I would worry about is if you were attempting an extended change interval. The TBN or total base number, could be lessened. This is an oils ability to remain stable and neutralize the acids produced from combustion. Let's say a normal oil tbn starts at 10 and goes to 5 in 200 hrs on your tractor. (3 the oil has expired) if you mix these 2 the tbn may start lower and fade faster.

In your scenario you are going to just pull this unit? Then you probably aren't concerned with extended interval and will be fine.

Another approach if worried is go purchase enough oil to do one change of each brand and in 2 changes have all the oil used up you wanted.
