Brass shavings in oil May 10, 2017 05:58AM
I have found brass shavings in the oil of my IH dt466. Found 3 little chips and the rest is just small flakes. I have checked every rod and main bearing, cam bushings, wrist pin bushings and rocker arm bushings and they are all fine, no chunks out of any of them. I have checked every place I know to check. Am I missing any place where they could have come from? Had engine completely apart this past winter and had no issues last year that I knew of. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

did you get a good look at your thrust bearings?

There's no shaft play in the turbo. And I just checked every rocker arm. Thrust bearings looked fine.

Aren't wrist pin bushing and cam bushings the only 'brass' in that engine?

model 100 pump? Could be the front bushing in the pump if so.

Valve guides?

The crankshaft has some end play but very little. I haven't measured it but I'd say it's within spec

I'm with Taylor. Check thrust bearings. If worn on sides, you need to check clearances to make sure something isn't too tight when transmission is bolted to engine assembly. Input shaft of transmission could be bearing on end of crankshaft?
