V-8 horsepower

Just curious as to how much the big boys are making at the Grand National level? |

My estimates would be:
ULSS - Years ago some 6 cylinders were claiming 5000, I assume it would be closer to 6000 now. PS - I would guess Warpath is around 3500 Hemis - Around 2800-3000 |

Ok, not to start a pi**ing match here. I can see the horsepower on the Hemis, on the Pro Stock and Super Stock tractors, but 5,000 to 6,000 horsepower on a ULSS??? Come on!!!!! I've got some prime farm ground in the bottom of my local watershed lake to sell. A ULSS might be making 2,500 to 3,500, but no way one of them is making 6,000 horsepower. |

I believe the 5-6000 HP in an ULSS, between how Don Nelson competes with his 6 cylinder mod tractor and the numbers I hear coming form the Blackbourn camp plus the amount of fuel being burnt in my cousins light super, its has me convinced.
It is amazing and crazy but look at the cylinder head flows and the high boost numbers. |

The latest dyno numbers I heard from inline 6 cyl ULSS Alky engines (chassis dyno) were in the 5k range.
Anyhow.. I would like to point out one thing. Fuel consumption calculations to HP can be REALLY misleading. They only work if you consider the A/F ratio with them. There is so much methanol going through those engines for cooling purpose only, which basically leaves the exhaust unburnt (even with correct egts). Figured that when working with various blower wheel designs in the Allisons here. Burnt enough fuel for over 5000 hp plus half a gallon of water, but had AFR ratios from 3.6 in the beginning to 5.2 at present - both at 1130 F egt. Some of the DSS guys are making 4500+. You dont think a 640 ci overhead cam engine can make more? Bet Chizek's LSS is around 4000. |

A good Dyno meter operator can make a dyno read whatever he wants it to read. Take the engines off the computer controlled dyno's of today and put them on some old school dyno's and you'll see some real numbers. |

So you think a TWD is making as much or more power than the GALOT tractors? |

As I said in my original response, I knew I'd open a can of worms, but my intent wasn't to as I said start a pi**ing match. I'm not going to argue the fact that todays tractors aren't making tremendous horsepower compared to tractors back in my day because they are. I also agree with Team One about track and wheel speed. Todays "good" running tractors and trucks can run 300+ feet in 12 seconds or in most cases much less. That compares to tractors in my day that it took 30 to 40 seconds to run 275 feet if you made it that far. Also, take into consideration todays sleds. They do not start anywhere near as hard as they did back in the 60's and 70's. They'll let a puller get up and run. I'd be willing to bet if you took practically any engine out of any class of pulling today and lugged it for 30 to 40 seconds down the track, there wouldn't be anything left but scrap iron! |

The top ulss tractors are north of 5000, and have been for 3-4 years. |

Sure, you can manipulate a dyno, but the results on the track don't lie, just look at that he wheel speed/track speed of an unlimited super stock these days! and compare that to what a light unlimited mod can do, they should be around 6000 hp and in my mind have less wheel speed. |
Re: V-8 horsepower

Should have been more specific. I was referring to the modified classes. |

I agree with Craig. There is so much fuel and air moving through them |
Re: V-8 horsepower

The reason I am asking is that I see the big 2 put a limit on horsepower for airplane engines but not for the V-8's. Just wondering how the power stacks up. |

tourqe is a big factor in power you can have same hp but less tourqe |

Re: V-8 horsepower

Look at the drag racing pro mod turbo guys, 40 psi boost 4000 ish H.P. Proline and Steve Morris both advertise these #'s at 526 c.i. The screw and 18-71's really help the blower guys too. And yeah, correction factor can make any engine a hero. |
