Welding axel plates November 28, 2017 02:34AM
Can someone tell me the correct way to weld axel plates on an axel?
Are you heating the axel?
Are you grinding through the hard outer layer?
Gussets or not?
How do you keep from burning the axel seal?
Thanks!!

When we did mine we did not heat the axle. We cut it off to the length we wanted and cleaned up the end of the axle for clean metal. We slid the hub onto the axle and tack welded it and measured it from the axle housing and turned the axle to make sure the distance was even, if it was not we broke a tack weld and re tacked it till we had it true. We then had a bucket of cold water and a towel. We soaked the towel down and wrapped it around the axle up against the seal and it kept them cool. periodically we re soaked the towel. You also could remove the axle from the housing and weld it on then reinstall it in the housing with a new seal. We welded it solid on the inside and back side as it was the plate style. We added three gussets to the back side. the plate style work fine. Alas tractor makes a great option that's a lightweight one that has the gussets built in. It also makes it easier to keep it true. We ground the thin hardened layer off the axle and then heated the axle to 200 degrees. We then tack welded the hub plate in several spots and kept it square to the axle with a carpenters speed square. Each hub plate was then welded 3 passes front and back, and we also put 3 gussets on the back side of the hub plate. Same as Oly did above, a wet rag was wrapped around the axle housing at the seal, and we just kept the rag soaked with cool water. The most important thing I was told was to make sure the axle cools very slowly once you are finished, we wrapped a welders blanket around the axle and ratchet strapped it to hold it snug, took a few hours for the axle to cool.
