Toter Home/Motor Coach Questions
|
I've been looking to upgrade from the 1 ton and gooseneck option to a toterhome/motorcoach option. Looking to haul a 7500-7800# puller and support vehicle in a tag trailer or semi trailer
For the motor coach option I assume I will need a twin screw to support a tag trailer, correct? I'm looking to use a 40' full height tag trailer with twin 20k axles. Is a 500hp D13 Volvo enough or overkill, what about 400hp or 600hp options? I've seen some 600hp volvos with a 6 speed allison but still have a 40k tag trailer capacity. I would assume a 10-12 speed would be needed? For the totorhome/semi trailer option is a twin screw needed? Same questions on HP and trans. I'm using an 800hp/1700 ft/lb Cummins 1 ton with 6 speed 68RFE and 40' 24k# deckover now. All opinions and experiences appreciated. Thanks. |

Too much is just enough on and off the track. 600 might seem like overkill because 180 would get you there, but the 600 will have resale the lesser resale would only dream of. A converted school bus would do the job. Check book capacity is your only limitation. |

A 300hp M-11 will get you there. How fast is up to you. Many many loads of 80-90,000 pound loads of grain going up and down the road with 350 to 425 hp. You will have basically an empty load so you can buy whatever and be fine. To me a single axle toterhome and a gooseneck 40' enclosed trailer would be a nice match |

Single axle hauler and dual trailer axles is a nice combo. If you have to go to a triple axle trailer, you'll want tandem axles on the toter. The triples like to push straight ahead, and in wet conditions, they can push a single axle around. I am of the same thinking as the previous replies. More is a good thing, when it comes to hp. Going from your Dodge to an underpowered coach will be painful. |

You are not going to be loaded heavy with pulling vehicle in a van trailer so big power is not necessary, M-11 cummins and up will work
stay away from 3406s, they make for a cheap truck, but not much MPGs |

Thanks for the replies. Right now I'm leaning towards a 500HP Volvo Motorcoach with 10sp trans.
Any thoughts on that 600hp Volvo with a 6sp Allison? |
