Look at the garrett turbo site. Lots of info on there

Map, map ring, map enhancement, slot all mean the same thing. As the turbo slows down due to engine RPM going down and boost pressure building, the slot allows air to escape instead of building more boost/pressure. The slot is in the low pressure area of the inlet of the turbo. A smooth inlet has no slot, or no area where the air can escape before being compressed, so as pressure builds and RPM goes down, the turbine side can no longer turn the compressor side and the turbo "stalls" allowing air to momentarily escape, making the chirping sound. The boost drops, the motor looses horsepower, so the turbo stalls again, and again, and again. the rapid chirp and loss of power is called "getting under the turbo". Typically, a slotted turbo helps eliminate that. Stalling the turbo is very hard on the turbo.

The LEGAL map ring is in the small inlet on the compressor (pretty) housing.
To be NTPA LEGAL, the map ring MUST be in the inside neck area where intake cover is measured at 3". (SF rules)
The MWE groove can only be .200" wide MAXIMUM
So, the new whiz bang, boom chicka-boom turbocharger with parts of the part OUTSIDE of the inlet "tunnel" hogged out exposing a larger OD portion of the compressor wheel, allowing gobs more air in,,,,,, well tractor pull fans, those are called ILLEGAL!!!!!
Not "undocumented" ILLEGAL
One more time for any confused snowflakes,,,,,,, ILLEGAL.
