Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually April 13, 2018 10:35AM
Thinking about up grading my tow vehicle. Which is more dependable, 2018 Ram 3500 Dually w/Cummins and Aisin Transmission or 2018 Ford F350 Dually w/Powerstroke ? Both Trucks have close to the same Ft. # of Torque and HP. The Ford is about $2,500 more than the Ram. Will be towing 38 Ft. enclosed Gooseneck trailer. Anyone have any good advice ?

A buddy of mine had a new Ford Superduty, traded it a short time later for a Ram. He said about no differance, other then the Ram has air ride on rearend, much better!

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually April 13, 2018 11:17AM
Plan on new ball joints and u joints and new brakes and rotors every 40000 miles on ram, less hp and torque also, heater duct doors fall off.No comparison.Fords years ahead.

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually September 22, 2018 03:41AM
I have 248,000+ miles on my 2008 RAM 3500, and haul horses all across the country. The Brake Drums and Brake pads maintenance are all within limits, but I have yet to replace U or Ball Joints. My RAM gets oil changes on a very regular basis, and with the H&S Tuner and oversized air intake filter, which I had installed the day after buying the RAM, I average 25 mpg (unloaded) at highway speeds (75 mph in AZ), and 20 mpg in town. This is my 4th HD RAM Diesel in the last 30 years and I Love my Cummins Engine.

65,000 plus miles on my 2012 2500 Ram Diesel. Lots of trailer miles pulling 12,000 plus pounds. Not one single problem. Ya it’s not a 3500 as he asked about. But it’s my 3rd Dodge. Both previous ones I ran 10 years each.

Nothing wrong with a Cummins but a Ford will always be a better truck

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually April 13, 2018 01:10PM
Sod buster I bought a new dodge in 2013 and it has 125k on it now and have never done anything but tires and oil change. I haul cattle at least once a week pull the flatbed all over in the summer hauling hay and the puller.

Not trying to start an argument here just passing on information from the most popular inspection and deisel performance shops in this area.I'm not bad mouthing either,Cummins is a proven power plant. There's more to a truck than a good engine though.

mr 3010 ,,, 65000 miles ?????? between myself and hired help , 5 Fords over 300,000 and still getting pounded everyday

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually April 14, 2018 05:06AM
6.0 head gaskets 6.4 connecting rod 6.7 I payed for but has pretty much stayed at dealer when I get it back it's headed to a dodge dealership and ford knows it. Emission issues and the latest issue is while driving it will just decide to shut itself off but starts back up 23,941 miles

Ford 6.7 Powerstroke April 14, 2018 06:10AM
We have 6 Ford 6.7 diesel trucks at work from 2011-2016 model years. They have been absolutely awesome. They are hauling and towing everyday. We have had very few minor issues that were under warranty. These are bone stock trucks. We will be buying another one this year (F350). I can't speak to the 2018 Dodge as I have never owned one, although I would highly recommend the Ford with the 6.7 Powerstroke.

I have a 2008 Dodge Dually ,a 2014 Dodge 3500 and a 2017 Ford F-350 all diesel automatics,The Dodges get better mileage and the 2017 Ford has more power otherwise not much difference. All are stock.

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually April 15, 2018 08:01AM
Im not looking to start a war here, ive owned them all. Currently on my second Duramax (2018). But i have always have good peformance with my cummins.
I good friend of mine stated if your going to run the roads and make a living with your truck, he recommended staying with the cummins, you can stop at any truck repair shop to get problems fixed. The 6.7 cummins is used alot in medium duty trucks. If your working your truck like in a construction enviroment, Ford is tough to beat. I converted to the GMC, for the simple fact i tow only to pulls now and , when im empty the truck rides just a touch softer then the other two.

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually April 15, 2018 09:08AM
I sold both brands for several years and it basically comes down to personal preference. The Cummins is great, but Dodge/Ram still seem to have tranny issues. Ford laid an egg with the 6.0L, but nothing was going to compare to the 7.3L anyway. The 6.7 is a beast and has had good reviews from what I can tell. If it's strictly going to be a tow vehicle, You might want to look at the F450/F550 or the commercial Ram's too. The Ram may cost less, but it will be worth less at trade-in time as well.

Thanks for all the positive responses. When you're thinking about spending a lot of money on a truck, you really would like to get it right the first time. Thanks again.

not everyone has the same or similir experiences,go into any shop, dealership, see all brands torn apart, luck, usage, how you drive, how you take care of,how you feel about your unit matters. All good trucks or would not be selling. Lemons in all aspects of life, and people, look at the complainers on here, even in a joking manner on too much snow in April, someone caught heck because they didn't like someone else's joke about it.JJEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually April 16, 2018 01:07AM
Joey, the remark about too much snow wasnt about too much snow, it was in reference to calling GOD a smarta$$, NOTHING funny about that at all, i know it was meant to be humorous but it wasnt, im sure theirs someone that is laying in a hospital somewhere that would gladly trade places with him regardless of the snow an be happy to do so.

He did not imply God,LLSL - you did, jokes are about fun,not to be taked literally. However,I do agree on the fact that God is not a Joke,He certainly has blessed me,in many ways. We all "see" things differently,"feel' differently and Believe our own path is best. I am thankful for all, --- challenges, support, gifts,The Holy Spirit,Mercy,Forgiveness and Hope.I am listening to the furnace run, feeling the sun, seeing the white frosty stuff glicne in the sunshine, waiting for it to melt, whenever than is.We never know what His plan might be. Can't wait to hook and go.Used to farm, but could not afford that freedom any longer. BUT STILL PULL A LOT.

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually September 22, 2018 08:13AM
I am on my 7th Dodge Cummins truck. The early ones has some issues (most of those issues stemmed from me hot rodding them) My 2013 RAM 3500 has been trouble free for 73,000 towing miles.

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually September 22, 2018 11:18AM
I've been a Ford diesel mechanic for almost 18 years and I work on everything not just powerstrokes. It's hard to compare older year models to the new ones just in the aspect that there has been so many upgrades and improvements on all 3 brands that an 18 is light years ahead of a 2010 in any aspect. I prefer the six seven just for the fact that they have been an extremely reliable power plant that isn't out sourced by anyone and then put into a truck when it comes 2 research and development and overall product quality. That being said they all have their issues especially with after treatment components but face it that's the new world we live in. The 6.7 Cummins is a proven Workhorse and a hell of an engine. The Duramax makes great power but I'm not sold on GM Transmissions and front suspensions. if you're going to spend the big money I would look at the big picture and drive all three. Like said in the previous post now a days used trucks are going for huge money even with a pile of miles on them so resale should be considered also. Good luck truck hunting.

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually September 22, 2018 11:15PM
Really depends on what you like and how you drive. If you like the stomp down, high rpms, buy the Ford. If you drive a little less heavy footed, buy the Cummins. They both are good machines and make good power but obviously the I-6 is gonna have the grunt lower in the RPMS.

As far as the Ford purists hating on the Ram... I USED to agree with them. The Ram was pretty chinsy until about 2012. Some day until 2014. But they’ve DRASTICALLY improved the shell around the Cummins in the last 5-10 years. The body used to rust out and the interior WAS cheap. But now, the Ram is very comparable and competive to the Ford and GM.

In full disclosure to my points, I owned an 04 Ram Cummins (not very nice inside). I now own a 2014 Ram. Night and day difference. I think it’s all in what you like. If you’re a Ford guy, get the Ford. If you’re a Ram guy get the Ram. If it’s a toss up, go with the better deal, in my opinion

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually September 25, 2018 05:25AM
While I appreciate the last few posts being mostly fact based and good advice, i need to clear up one statement that caught in the previous post.....

"They both are good machines and make good power but obviously the I-6 is gonna have the grunt lower in the RPMS."

Here are facts on how that shakes down:

2018 Ford 6.7L peak Torque/rpm - 935lb/ft @ 1800 rpm
2018 Ram 6.7L peak Torque/rpm - 930lb/ft @ 1700 rpm

While I will agree that there is 100 rpm difference, we're splitting hairs on overall peak capacity. It won't make a great deal of difference if you're applying it to towing of any real degree.

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually September 30, 2018 11:52AM
Rams don’t fall apart around the Cummins anymore. 15 years ago, yes. Trust me I had one. But now, no.

As far as the torque thoughts....That’s interesting. Didn’t know they were that close. I guess I’d be interested to see the whole curve because I don’t think anyone can argue that a V-8 will make more torque than an I-6 throughout the RPM range...

But as you said...They both are good. I’m admittedly biased toward a Cummins but it comes down to...You like what you like.

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually September 26, 2018 03:50AM
Any company that makes you take the cab off to change your turbo is not showing me very good judgment. You can argue about this all day it's worse than JD vs IH when it comes down to it what ever makes you comfortable myself I'm a dodge guy

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually September 26, 2018 06:48AM
Fair point I guess......but when on earth do you ever need to change the turbo, Lol!!

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually September 27, 2018 04:11PM
And consider the huge shop time difference in replacing a water pump. The Ford is NOT a simple task

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually September 27, 2018 11:00PM
Consider the whole truck falling apart around the Cummins been there done that
Nothing wrong with a Cummins but you have to look at the big picture

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually September 27, 2018 11:15PM
I'm not sure which ford your talking about but at most the water pump on 6.7 ford is a 3 hour job.

Re: Ram 3500 Dually or Ford F350 Dually September 28, 2018 05:15AM
Cab removal is not necessary with the 6.7
