Dt466 p7100 swap help
|
Long time lurker, and anyway posting for a friend with a dt466 recently swapped to a p7100 injection pump (scheilds adapter, Dodge Cummins 175hp rated pump, h2d turbo), and a fresh out of frame overhaul. It's in a truck/toyhauler. We are both newish to the performance diesel world (been around them forever on the farm though) and are leaning on you guys for a bit of help.
He's having some tuning problems (in short ended up melting pistons), and he asked me to help out, he's not the most internet savy. Just trying to figure out what's going on and how to correct it. The motor/pump: Pump is a reman'd p7100 pump off a running 5.9⅝, has a aftermarket fuel plate, and 3k rpm gov springs. Turbo is a rebuilt holset h2d (just a hair smaller then a hx50). Rest of the motor is a stock 89' solid roller motor with a fresh out of frame overhaul. Timing was initially set at 24* advanced, then turned back to 21-22* (hard starting at 24*). There is an egt on the motor, but it wasn't setup at time of the piston melt down. Problem: high enough egt to melt pistons 2-6, and destroyed #3 and #5 in a very short period of time. Questions: Injectors, are stock ih injectors sufficient for the p7100 pump, or do they need modified to avoid problems (ie higher pop off pressure or similar)? Would two leaking injector cups (injectors were pulled during rebuild and two never sealed in the cups) cause high egt's? The motor never smoked black, just a grey Haze that reeked of fuel, would this be stuck injectors or something else? The p7100 is being fed by a unregulated 7.3 powerstroke lift pump (85psi fuel pressure), would this harm the pump at all and feed excess fuel into the motor? The fuel plate and aneroid housing were set in the mid adjustment range, and the star wheel he has no idea on where it is, where ever the last guy had it set. There are no boost leaks, turbo built great boost (30psi with minimal lag), no fuel leaks or air in the fuel as far as we can tell. Anything other tips to look at on this pump swap that would cause high egt's? Thanks in advanced everyone. |

Injector tips need to be matched for the pistons. Spray angle.
What pump/injectors where in it before the p7100? |

Factory Bosch 10mm mw pump, stock pistons and injectors, only the pump and turbo were changed. |

Thanks for the help koepke, with figuring out the timing being out to lunch.
Next question, who has a connection for a low cost cylinder kits for this? |

You'd be better off finding good used OEM pistons and sleeves than looking for the cheapest new ones you can find. |
