Is needled rear needed? November 13, 2018 02:34AM
Got a case 970 straight 8, 504ci will be pushing 400hp, weight is 10,500. Will the rear end have to be needled or will it be fine? Is there a point when it should be? Thanks.

It will pull straighter if you needle it. Don’t know that there is a given HP where you should do it.

Unless you’ve pulled it apart and looked you won’t know, the pinion gears could be close to galled solid already. Buy the kit or complete carrier from rdl 1953. Great kit from experience. Needled rear corrects easier on wheel brakes and pulls strait.

Our 970 8 speed is needled, we weigh 9500 in the heavy class,504 probably 700 hp. We very very seldom need to hit the brakes. I don't have anything to compare it to but I would say its worth it.

My opinion is that you are better off building your tractor from the rear end forward. I would needle the diff If you have ever pulled with a galled differential you would know

Best $1000 you’ll spend on the tractor

The Pruits are doing a lot of work now rear ends engines or whatever,It may be worth a call they have done several new crosses and needling good guys

Cost me $200 to have the cross machined, and about $110 for needles. Didn’t do brass washers or thrust washers. This was an M rearend running in a classic modified.
