I’d say de-cube a 466. Stronger block and parts are readily available. |

That's a reasonable plan. There are also many trying the 300 series engines as well. Much lighter overall which will help your cause making class weight. Those parts and the associated knowledge are not as popular, but still can be done.
Those older gas engines only have 4 mains.....which is less than ideal for the application. You can use a 362 gas head on a 404 block though ('69 and later). I have an 8.1L Natural Gas head that is no longer in use that could be bought, has about 30 runs on it since being redone. |

Does someone make a decube kit for 404 to 370 because I have a couple spare 404 blocks |

The 300 series is my choice. I have several parts available for the 300 series engine. Aluminum clutch housing adapters, deck plates, pistons, sleeves etc.
The 6068 block is alot lighter than a 400 series and very stout. with just few parts swaps 360 cubes is very easy to do. |

6068 and 6059 is used heavily in deere construction equipment. 544 loaders 200lc excavators, graders and 700, 750 dozers |

Which series engine you use is a personal choice to a degree.....certainly nothing wrong with the 300 series if you do your research. It is certainly a fair challenge to get a 400 series in a 6000 class and have a reasonable amount of movable weight without compromising structure. Some have done it with varying degrees of success. I am challenged at 6500 with a 400 series engine, but will admit I do have a few areas to lose weight yet that do not compromise structure. |

Definitely following this post I’ve been thinking about building a Deere myself. |

I am putting a 329/359 together on alcohol. Lots of challenges using that engine. Has it's good and bad points.
I think it is good for alcohol , I would not want to try it on diesel. |

What is the biggest challenge with the 329/359 motors |

Thing I ran into is nobody makes parts for them. Roller rockers, girdles, etc.
There is anything you want for a 400 series. I've been in the process of making performance parts available for a 300 series plus I'm building one myself and helping out another so will see how it goes. I wouldn't say it's more difficult than any other brand just takes time and money. |

The downfalls are small diameter main bolts but should be able to be tapped bigger. Make new steel caps and girdle.
Stock rod bolts are small but aluminum rods for alcohol fixes that. Rocker arms are tiny and only one bolt but should be able to machine and use a head bolt. Build new rocker arms. Pencil injectors but can be drilled for spark plugs. The front timing idler gear is bad but alcohol eliminates that and have to build a front cover, You have to make a oil pan because stock is heavy. The 6068 329/359 heads are all the same when the intake is machined off. If you can find a intercooler head for a 359 already machined and tapped but there a unicorn. Good luck if you need any assistance. |

Ihave aluminum rods pistons and a ported head for sale for the 404 buy it all cheaper than the rods cost |
Re: JD llss

Building one myself. Bought the rear and it came with a gas engine that I was going to use. Discovered it was only 4 mains. Was told that 404 was the way to go and got one cheap. After looking at the specs, you really need to lose some stroke out of a 404 (which equal a pricey crank job or changing to expensive rods and a bit cheap crank job) in my opinion. After talking with SVD I am going to try the 6.8 with a 359 crank route. Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions and I will do my best to point you in the right direction. |
