Just curious what a fire sale is? Are you putting them back where they came off? As in cap 1 to journal 1, #2 cap to journal 2......

This engine has been through a fire and no I haven’t mixed up the caps

What is happening with them when you try to put them back on? Also how hot of fire were they in?

They were easy to get out with some wiggling but now feel like they are too wide to fit back in the block. I’ve been trying to install them dead on but feels like it’s a tight fit. There was still oil in the pan after the fire so I’m thinking it couldn’t have gotten too terribly hot.

Sounds like the heat may have altered the caps as heat from welding or cutting causes different metals to warp or spring out of shape, and when you removed caps they possibly sprung out of shape. Try starting one side barely in position then lightly tap with a small hammer to see if you can get the other side started, then tap on into place. I have seen some caps that seemed a little tight to start with, but still seated alright once you got them near seated position.

The tighter the cap the better it is.
But if they were not tight before check the linebore.
If a main caps are loose that is not good.

Sounds like a good candidate engine for stock power .Or the salvage yard.
