The worst part about truck and tractor pulling as a competitor is getting to the pull safely and getting home from the pull safely. Now that is my opinion and no one has to agree with it, but many competitors will or should.

Traveling March 29, 2021 03:12AM
I use to worry a lot about traveling after events for two reasons the first being I was always tired and the second being what someone else mentioned, thats about the time the bars are emptying out. Now that I don't have to work the next day we most always wait and head out the next morning but I know most don't have that luxury.

We went out about a half a dozen times with the Ford a few years ago. I believe that the texting and driving or what ever is on the phone is as bad if not worse that the drinking. You would see the lights coming behind you and they would be wondering all over the road. I would slow down and prep to pull over if I could when they were close or get off the next exit and get back on if I could. If they would catch me before I could get off you could see the glow of the phone. I live close to a Casino and most of the cars would turn toward it. Not many issues after that exit.

I have to say I don't envy truckers at all having to deal with drivers cutting them off all the time. Kills me when they pass you at about 90 then slam on the breaks to make an exit. Then you see billboards all over the place advertising for lawyers going after truckers. I would bet 90 % of the time the truckers were cutoff without reasonable stopping distance. Then as JJJ said the constant texting.

I to do worry about getting home. About 15 - 18 years ago I was coming back from a pull in Michigan traveling down 131 1:00 ish in the morning and I heard on the cb blank, blank, blank.blank there is a h*** of a wreck in the south bound lane and I could see the glow not far in front of me. A car crossed the median and struck an rv head on and it caught fire. That was less than a minute or two in front of me. That worked me knowing if I had been that minute or two earlier that could have been me.

I just googled it and Ron Berry fell asleep and hit a culvert while on the way home from a pull at Pulaski,Tenn..It sure doesnt seem like it was 17 years ago..

The crazy part of it is, technology is and has been in place for some time now that drivers can use hand-free in the vehicle - (but we all know that cruise control has been in vehicles in many, many years but people tend to not utilize it either, smh). As a person coming home many nights after an event, I use the bluetooth in the truck as to keep myself focused not just on the road, but on those on the same road - cars, trucks, and wildlife. Not many bars open anymore, but there is plenty of drug use out there to compensate. Take in to account that there are 10X more sober drivers that SHOULDN'T be driving since they have no concept on how larger vehicles operate. It's scary on the highways, that's for sure. And let's not forget John Mumma's accident heading to Louisville either. Highways are brutal, for sure.

I have seen my fair share of near misses and hits on the road. It is pretty dangerous out there and you gotta give all fellow drivers space no matter what they drive. The biggest problem I see is people driving slow in the hammer lane and it creates a dangerous backup of traffic. I got behind a driver running 50 in a 75 in Nebraska Sunday, that was almost...almost bad. This summers traffic is going to be insane so be careful out there.

Got hit by a drunk 12?years ago totaled the truck, trailer and tractor and nearly killed 4 of us! He admitted to drinking all day before he hit us 2 feet from our white line! Pretty scary. His insurance wanted it to go away in a bad way

driving home 2 or 3 hours after the pull is over is rough, i agree even driving a car home. but i am addicted and keep going. pulling is a drug that i got to have. i live in central Minnesota and driven to Tohma Wisc. 4 hours 1 way watch the pull and drive 4hours back home. yes i am crazy lol.GrinningBeer

Not worried about it. lol Just stating a fact. Got pulled over myself leaving BG. Should have seen the look on the patrolman's face when I told him I've "never had a drink in my life" (and I haven't). He's like ,"you haven't?, NEVER!?! I said nope! Almost told him I was the "designated decoy" but didn't want to push my luck! lol He let me go in a hurry! I did let him know at least 6 real drunk drivers went by in the couple minutes he wasted on me! lol

Minnesota lost a sled operator in the 70's because of this. Hit by a drunk driver after a show. If I heard the story right Doc Christensen tried to rescue him but the flames kept him back.

Jay Forrester the patriarch of the Forrester Pulling team out of Chambersburg Pa. lost his life in an accident going to a pull in 2000. I remember 1st seeing him pull at Hughesville Pa..
