Putting a P-3000 injection pump on a 5.9L Cummins April 02, 2021 03:00AM
I don’t know if this has been covered on here or not, and I’m just not finding it but here it goes. I have a 12v Cummins out of a pickup with p-7100 pump cover. I’m trying to run a p-3000 injection pump on this engine due to rules governor type etc. is there an adapter out there to adapt the smaller flange p-3000 pump to the p-7100 front cover. I’m also open to changing front covers if someone knows of a Cummins cover from another application that will accept a p-3000 or if the A pump front cover off a tractor/equipment will work that would be fine as well. thank you in advance

You can use your P7100 front cover, all you need is a spacer to reduce the bore size of the front cover for the snout of the P3000.

Ok great! I was told the mounting flange was a different size as well so I didn’t even try it for myself. I just put the pump up to the front cover and bolted it up for mock-up. I see now that the pump has to come back quite a bit for the pump gear to line up with the cam gear has anyone experienced this before and do you know a rough measurement for the thickness of spacer plate you used thanks again

A true P3000 has the larger 30mm tapered drive size and the larger pilot area. Bolt patterns are same for nearly all P pumps. The generic P pumps that most use for pulling get erroneously called P3000 mainly to distinguish them apart from 7100, and 8500. So if a P3000 for a RoGator, 2380, etc was used for the core to build the pulling pump, it would bolt right on.

Injection pump Ed I’m not sure it is a pump off a John Deere 7520 the spot that pilots into the front cover that has an O ring in it is definitely smaller than a P-7100 I put the pump on and I found that the drive hub that the gear bolts would put the pump gear way out and away from the cam gear do you know of a way to remedy this issue?

A 7520 pump or any old JD 4wd pump is the smaller P pump, 8430/40/50, 8630/40/50. Cam taper is 25mm and pilot is smaller. Not an easy swap.

so put the rules correct gov on the 7100 and be done

You can call scheid, they offer a hub and adjustable gear. And have a bushing made for the difference in the bore of the timing cover, or I think I might still have mine somewhere.

Are you sure it’s not an A pump

Not sure exactly what you're doing, but an original P pump off a 7520/6030 is a small 10mm plunger pump not capable of a whole lot of fuel delivery without getting into the start retard notches. Seems like a lot of screwing around for a very mediocre pump.

According to the tag on the pump it is a p-pump plungers have 2 nuts one on each side holding them in. Injection Pump Ed Trust me if I knew what I know now I would have just bought the p-7100 that fits the case perfectly and had an ag governor put on it. But I only had partial information up until now so I’m too deep in this one to scratch it and start over. So Ben is there a way I can get ahold of you for that bushing? I have my Cummins gear already cut to fit the JD hub now I just need exactly that bushing/spacer to get the cam gear and pump gear to mesh properly thank you guys
