Jd 404 squeak while cranking May 12, 2021 04:24PM
Alright guys so I freshened up a 404 turbo john deere engine to go in my 4020 pulling tractor and I have a weird squeaking noise when I am cranking the engine over. It can only be heard with the valve cover off and cranking. I ball honed the liners as they were not scored or anything just wanted to get the glaze off. Installed new rings. The squeaking noise goes away if you cover the intake up and crank it over. Anyone know what I may have done wrong?
Think it could just be the rings on the fresh croshatching? The engine only have about 5 mins of runtime on the build. Think I should just send it and see what happens?

If you only hear it when cranking you may be hearing the injectors squawking?? Do hear it with the fuel stop puller?? DW

Tight valve guide? You didn't happen to put in oversize valves and they are rubbing on the sleeve?
