Fuller Trans in Mod Question August 26, 2009 11:32AM
I have a mod (single BBC) tractor that I have a T-905 5spd Fuller thans in. It is in front of a 640 deere skidder rearend. The gears are too fast for a single engine, it had 2 blown BBC before I got it. The ratios are 33:1 and up. I need gears in the 40 to 50:1 ratio. I was told that the trans cannot be geared any lower. Was wondering if anyone could tell me if anyone could make or has gears to replace the fast gears. This is a old trans that Im not sure i can even get parts for anymore. Or some other info on how to solve this problem without breaking the bank. I am also running a 2 spd lenco trans in front of the fuller. Thanks for any info you can give.....

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question August 26, 2009 12:56PM
your skidder choice is 640 = 24:1 or 540 = 26.1, IMO not worth changin skidder for 2 pts, and no u can't get gears made for skidder. you can get gears made for the fuller, figure up what you need and go from there, lose the lenco, should be able to do with one tranny.

PRO FAB
Throw that fuller in the junk pile, scrap iron prices are up again!
Actually I'd take the lenco out at the same time, and use the money from selling that to offset the price of the new pro fab.

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question August 26, 2009 02:06PM
Check the ratio's on a 4 speed pickup tran's or even a 5 speed I know a 4 speed is 37 to 1 in a skidder in 3rd

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question August 26, 2009 03:27PM
I have a 905 fuller that I took out of our pickup. I will check what the ratios are for you tomorrow..

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question August 26, 2009 04:34PM
Thanks for looking, what is the approx cost of a pro fab, not cheap Ill bet...

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question August 27, 2009 01:50AM
We all don't have Harold's money Smiling
With shaft, couplers, etc you are looking at between $4-5k for new. Used is option, look for profab, holden or humpco, try Bob Jostock.
If not, there are fuller gears out there, figure out what u need and do "wanted" ad, or have them made.

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question August 27, 2009 02:02AM
A 3 speed pro fab single countershaft would be fine, wouldn't need the 5 speed twin.
Haven't priced new, but saw used for 1700 somewhere, but you would have couplers, and a shaft or two to buy (I just happen to have some nice used 1 3/4"-10 couplers and a couple of shafts with 1 3/4"-10 splines on them for sale real reasonable)Winking

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question August 27, 2009 02:23AM
Got them for ya Dutch.The ratios are 1 to 1. 1.25 to 1. 1.50 to1. 1.75 to 1

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question August 27, 2009 03:08AM
Thanks, 2wd... now how do I figure my final ratios if I have a 24:1 rearend. Dont exactly know the formula to do this. I need schooling on this. thanks again...

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question August 27, 2009 03:22AM
24 x 1= 24
24 x 1.25= 30 to 1
24 x 1.50= 36 to 1
24 x 1.75= 42 to 1

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question August 27, 2009 05:01AM
Thanks for the help. Guess Ill take the fuller apart and see what im going to need if I stick with it. If anyone has a trans for sale let me know...

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question August 27, 2009 06:23AM
To bad it wont work for you because Im not going to use it again..We put a scs box in.
Why cant you change the gears in the lenco to get the ratios you want ?
I dont know anything about lencos..

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question August 27, 2009 07:35AM
checked with lenco I can change the gears. it is going to cost $1700 I was trying to go a little cheaper route. May end up doing it if I cannot figure something else out. I guess if Im going to play Ill have to pay..

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question August 27, 2009 09:52AM
Dutch,
What size engine are you running? Also, what rear tires? There's a group of us that run single engine mods here in Indiana. If you can answer those questions, some of us in the group might be able to tell you where you need to be (well close anyway) on your ratios. I do know from running a T-905 in my blown modified years ago, that there's various headset gear ratios available for the 905. There's also some other combinations that can be run in 2nd thru 4th gears. We ran a single blown 500 cu.in. Chevy with a set of 30's. Our old 905 had one gear overdrive, one direct and one under. Check with Mike Holden, he use to build his steel cased twin countershafts using Fuller gears. He might be able to get you where you need to be ratio wise.

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question August 27, 2009 01:13PM
Iam running a BBC 496 1050 carb approk 700 HP I think I need to be in the 45-50:1 range not sure. Right now my low gear is 33:1 and cannot get on top of it off line. Running a 3 disc crower ..Thanks and Id like the # of the guy you mentioned .

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question August 27, 2009 02:59PM
If weight is not an issue, and avoid new gear production, the 4 speed trans from the guys twd could be used to replace the lenco, and you'd have some deep gear reductions, with a pair of trans that your hp is not going to challenge. A turbine puller used to run a Fuller trans as a reduction unit, infront of his trans mounted to his planetary rear, also a fuller. With 20 possible gear ratios (4sp thru a 5 sp), you might end up with 2 or 3 excellent pulling ratios.

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question August 31, 2009 07:46AM
Dutch,
Your final drive ratio will also depend on your rear tire size. If you're running 24's, with around 700 HP, you're going to probably going to need to be down in the 48 to 52 to 1 ratio to as you say "get on top of it!" If you're running 30's, you may need to be closer to 55 to 1. Also, the less gears you run through, the less HP you'll lose through the drivetrain.
While combinations of transmissions make for lots of usable ratios, they also rob lots of power. At around 700 HP, you can't afford to spin lots of gears. I recommend you keep it simple as possible. If you can't afford the ProFab route, then look at other ratios available for your T 905. Just my two cents worth, but if you're wanting to be competitive, you need all the HP to the ground you can get.

I have two 905's available after the season one has aluminum case made by the late Wayne Kennedy ? Have lotsa gears. 515-359-2390

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question September 01, 2009 05:25AM
Todd bought the 905 out of our Sweet Pain triple chevy mod. We had 5 useable ratios when we had it. Dad, Doyne (sp?) and maybe some others at C&H Truck in Sioux City, NE put this together. That fact that it had 5 ratios that were real close to each other means one of those guys knew what was going on.Smiling

It seems like Todd had played around with finding different gears for different ratios. Could also talk with C&H.

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question September 01, 2009 06:23AM
you could put an SCS 30 behind the motor and you can make spilts at about 5% down to 2.5 to 1, in front of the 905...AND I got some 30's for $1000 with extra gears.....Marty Nies

Re: Fuller Trans in Mod Question September 01, 2009 02:39PM
Marty, give me a # to call or email it to me . Thanks
