Watch the above video at about the 7:15 mark. How far were the spectators away? Two rows? Less than 10 feet? |

Very lucky there wasn't more speed involved of it could have looked like an episode of Dukes of Hazard.
The point of a SAND pile at the end of the track is to absorb energy. The SAND pile is supposed to act like a Runaway Truck ramp that you see on mountainous roads and expressways and the shifting sand absorbs the energy. A DIRT pile on the other hand... it can work OK... a packed dirt pile doesn't seem ideal. The only thing a packed dirt pile does well (other than be a ramp) is to lift the front of the vehicle up when it's still hooked to the sled. This in turn drops the drawbar and in extreme circumstances even put the vehicle up on the wheelie bars. Really lucky it wasn't worse. The goal is to absorb energy (sand), not redirect it into the crowd (packed dirt)! Jake Morgan Owner, PULLOFF.COM Independent Pulling News This page is a free service. They have changed their terms of service and stated they would fine PayPal users for spreading "misinformation" and "hate, violence, racial or other forms of intolerance that is discriminatory". PayPal did not provide definitions for some of these vague terms. Woke corporate policies regarding "misinformation" could result in an automatic fine of $2,500 which would have been removed directly from the customer’s PayPal account. PayPal did backdown from some of their policies but quietly implemented portions of them in later terms of service. A financial institute has no right to monitor social media accounts or speech. This is unacceptable and I'll no longer do business with PayPal. |

A sand pile works if the vehicle isn’t coasting—see Rex Kuhn at Murfreesboro years ago. Occasionally you will see roller guys rolling up onto the pile—the last thing that needs to be done—it needs to be left “fluffed up.” Another thing that needs to be addressed is the angle of the face of the pile. Obviously the higher and the steeper the better, while still giving the vehicle a chance to roll up on it instead of running into a vertical wall.
I may be mistaken, but in the video it sounds as if the truck was still under power after coming loose from the sled. Something needs to be checked into there. That type of hard packed soil, is not helpful, just a launch ramp. |
