466 to 540

Watching the discussion on new LPS class and wondering about the best way to make a small block deere (466) into a 540...I know this is pretty simple to most of you, but I can't be the only one wondering this.
Thanks! Chip |

Depends upon if you want to bore, stroke, or a little of both.
Factory bore x 5.5 stroke = 539.5 CID 4.625 bore x 5.35 stroke - 539.3 CID 4.75 bore x 5.05" stroke = 536.9 CID 4.875 bore x 4.75 stroke = 531.9 CID |

You get an 8.1 liter engine. You'll need new pistons anyway because can't cut valve releif in stock pistons. SO you get thinner sleeves and a little bigger piston. 4 3/4 bore. no boring the block and bing 540 |

Thanks for the help. Got a 466 and really don't want to bore it, so I think I know my options. Thanks! |

Not to open a can of worms, but what is better, bore or stroke?

When you bore the 8.1 sleeves to 4.75 don't they get to thin? Anyone running this setup? |

Don't bore sleeves more than 4.625.
Get replacement drop in liners to go to 4.75 Sleeves are little different than 466 |

Hey Chip, This is the set up we ran when we put our first motor together 5 or 6 years ago. We were planning on running a stock 8.1 motor but we needed new pistons because the stock ring is too high up on piston to cut valve reliefs. When we called around about new pistons and sleeves we found that we could get a thinner sleeve and 4.75 pistons for the same price as the stock size. And that would put the motor right around 540 (538?). It was a no brainer. I don't know if an 8.1 crank will swing in your 466 block. I seem to remember that the main bearings were wider or something. I am sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong. On your question about bore vs. stroke. Well I would say that a bigger bore on the 466 will let you do some headwork and put in bigger valves. That is where most power can probably be gained to start with, especially with a big turbo. But you'll get torque with that longer stroke. I don't know what people will find that will work the best. But I am guessing that a 4.75 bore and the stroke on the stock 8.1 crank has got to be pretty much bulletproof. |

8.1 has the same hole spacing. Mains are a lot bigger. You want a 8.1 l block |
