Farmall 400/ dt360 gearing January 31, 2022 11:44AM
Couple questions about gearing… have a dt360 3x3 13mm open rpm p pump no cooler with water injection. R&P is 19/50. 18.4-38 tires. Weight is from 6500 - 7500lbs. What would be a comfortable set of ratios to run? Direct is around 18:1…. Should I get a 19:1 , 20:1 and 21:1?

I'll help try to get some conversation started and ask a few questions because I know if I don't somebody else will: What are the tracks like where you pull? Are they heavy clay? Sandy? Loamy topsoil? How is the sled usually set? Drag race? Boat anchor?

They have changed their terms of service and stated they would fine PayPal users for spreading "misinformation" and "hate, violence, racial or other forms of intolerance that is discriminatory". PayPal did not provide definitions for some of these vague terms. Woke corporate policies regarding "misinformation" could result in an automatic fine of $2,500 which would have been removed directly from the customer’s PayPal account. PayPal did backdown from some of their policies but quietly implemented portions of them in later terms of service. A financial institute has no right to monitor social media accounts or speech. This is unacceptable and I'll no longer do business with PayPal.

Most tracks are a brown clay, some top soil mix with clay. Sled is intermediate; easier off the line, gain wheel speed but keeps you within 300-310’

I pull with some IH's with DT360s in similar weight classes but limited to 3000 RPM, but they are using 656 and 706 frames, they run as high a 25 MPH, which works out to 24:1 final ratio. I am not sure that helps you very much, but it is a data point.

Do you think a 400 rear end and transmission will hold up?

Re: Farmall 400/ dt360 gearing February 01, 2022 09:21AM
I’m not worried about it holding up, that’s taken care of. More just the power to weight ratio. How much can a dt360 built like this, turn for gearing. What range of gears would work best for this weight, tires, track etc

Re: Farmall 400/ dt360 gearing February 01, 2022 12:06PM
Depends on how exotic you build it. Good 3x3 ought to make 1200 hp without too much trouble. 3x3 map width superfarm charger should be a bit higher. Smaller engine will need more rpm to make similar HP. Plus you won’t have the torque to turn a real big cog like a 640 superfarm.
You need to keep in mind you’ve asked for info most pullers won’t give up. But rumor on the track is light supers running 3x4 chargers are running 19:1.

Similar setup to a 410 3x4 llss but a step under. Although llss is not the class this is being built for, I’m not prying for dyno numbers or cam numbers. Just a general overview of what could work and what doesn’t. This combination doesn’t seem to have as much support as a 400 series IH in a hotfarm 1066, so that’s why I’m asking for first or second hand guidance. I apologize if I came off snoopish

If it is something you want to consider, I have a constant mesh set from a 560 that puts 2nd gear at about 20 mph. Custom 4th gear set, at about 22 mph, third then falls in at 24 mph.

Jake 566… do you have a number I could get ahold of you on?

Too fast, that is why I’m asking. This will be an rpm motor and I wasn’t sure (based on weight) what it could handle. This gives me an idea of where to hover around and I can fine tune from there. Thank you

We run similar setup just not a dt360. 3X3 super farm turbo no cooler water injection p pump open rpm (we turn alot) and full cut tires at 6500 tight tracks and good sleds. Anything under 20to1 is to fast without cooler and more cubes. I'd stay is the mid 20s with a setup like that unless its real exotic. With a 26 to 1 gear at 4500 rpm is roughly 26 to 28 mph with a tall 18.4. Keep in mind faster gears are not away better if you can't stay on top of it small cubes don't lug very well.

What ring and pinion you running? Talk to some 466 hot farm guys. There running 19 and 18:1 little more power and weight. But gives you a starting point and you can break you selection from there. 1 or 2 over and 1 to 2 below? Any comb you want. The other question is the range split 3% 6% or 10%. I would think (have to know ring & pinion) that your setup would definitely turn direct so one under 3,6,10% choice and 3 above. Also some rotary 466 turn 20 and 19:1???? Have to do your homework for sure.
