News from NTPA tech school.
Cross bolts in exhaust stacks are now required to be 1/2", and must be there.
The cool inserts the turbo makers came up with don't meet the requirements for cross bolts.

The insert directly after the turbo had been getting thru tech. without any cross bolts.

From what I was told when the first turbos with the 6” turbine wheels failed it pulled the pipe out of the v-band clamp. This is why they made the bolt on piece that attaches to the exhaust hsg. I don’t think going to 1/2” bolts will help that much

I hate to bust your bubble but that was put into place at the end of 2019 for the 2020 season but then we all know what happened.

Why is people up in arms about cross bolt rule. I bet a couple 1/2" bolts and a drill bit are a whole lot cheaper than the fancy thingymawhopper insert. Whats the big deal?

And I will add, the way I interpret the rule and been advised is they must be bolts and nuts with the head and nut visible on the outside--not welded in rods so the ends are flush.

I know of some neat, tig welded rod as cross bolts, that technically are not legal.

Grade 5 1/2 bolts, head of bolt must be visible
