Just curious about EJ Potter's tractors. Is this correct:
Ugly Tractor 1, ran in mid 70s, pulled 7 and 9. Ugly 2, ran mid 70s. There are a couple pics on Facebook of the two. Not sure if this one ran 7,9; 5,7;or 5,7,and 9 Double Ugly- built approx 1980. Not sure how long he ran it. Did it run just 9 and 12, or could ot make weight in the 7? Was there a 4th Potter tractor ran by his son in the 5? Anyone with knowledge of Potter's tractors, please chime in. If above info incorrect, please set me straight. Thanks |

There was a 4th tractor but it was before the ugly tractors. Lloyd and Artie Brown ( also from mid Michigan) had a mod with Chrysler power. Ej got his start in pulling by helping the brown brothers and in about 1973 became partners in the tractor. Winter of 1974 they built the first Allison tractor went by the name Brown pulling team. 1975 ej rolls in to indy super pull and wins. 1976 ej rolls in to indy and wins again. A month later he shows up at the NFMS and all hell breaks loose. Louisville had put into place a standard where equipment was to be neat, clean and painted. Ej being ej goes to the store buys brown primer rattle cans, small amount of white paint and a brush! Paints the tractor in the parking lot in brown primer and with the brush and white paint Paints UGLY on it. The ugly tractor and name was born!!! The outcome of the 1976 nfms was ej kicking their ass again!! Fast forward a couple years and ej goes to San Francisco ( cow palace) upon arrival he is shunned because of his less than desirable appearance of his ttractor. So much so that they put him and his tractor in a barn all by himself. The fancy Cali guys didn't want their tractors on display next to ej's. In true madman fashion he simply walked a mud hole in them boys a$$ and beat them all!!!! If you look up the word " outlaw" or " bada$$" in Websters dictionary there is no definition. Just a picture of the MICHIGAN MADMAN!! As far back as I can remember I can not recall his son ( jack) ever driving and never remember him running the 5 mod class. |
