354 Perkins Turbo questions... April 29, 2022 02:49AM
5700 pound class, 360ci limit, 8MPH speed limit, 18.4 bias ply tires, NO Cooler.

Everyone else is thinking about a 5.9 Cummins, but I'm a Massey Guy...

Can a 354T keep up at this setup? Planning on starting with a turbo engine so I have piston cooling jets. What else can I do other than turning up the CAV pump and putting a 3LM on it?

Rethink the 3LM, S200 would be better suited to the smaller cid engine!

Start with a dot4 engine or 1006 series engine if possible. 8 mph should not be a problem at that weight and speed even with the older engine variations. Have fun!

Put a rosamaster head on your cav pump and a s 300. f the class is a rotary pump rule you will becompetitive. If its a p pump class you will probably struggle to be in top 3.

No pump limits, but there is a 2800RPM limit. At that speed I wouldn't think a huge P-Pump would be necessary or even helpful...

Use a dot 4 engine or at least a dot 4 head. you can put a 450 roosa master head on a 3 bolt stanadyne pump body that will bolt in place of the CAV. S300 turbo probably 2.3 - 2.5 inlet. 5x18 injectors. stud the head and go have fun. at 8mph and that light of weight you should have plenty of power

Sounds like a fun class. The 1006 engine is a better platform to start with. 12 port heads flow better, and they can have a p-pump adapted to them more easily since the pump is horizontal instead of vertical.
A good rotary is $1500 minimum, has a short life span, and has long injection duration. A good used p-pump can be had for $2-3k and will last a long time and make way more power. Been there done that. The rotary can do 8mph, but not without pumping some money into it.

Not to mention in a year or two everything will Escalate and you’ll be building for more power anyhow haha. So may as well start bigger than you think you need. Just my 2 cents

The 1006 would be a way better platform to start with but then he would have to decube it 5 cubic inches

Valid point Perkins man. It went right over my head that it was 5ci over the limit
