Injector tip size question July 05, 2022 10:06AM
Theoretically, if a pump was putting out 500cc of fuel, what would be the difference between running a 9mm tip that is 4x0.40 vs a 7mm tip that is 7x0.255 in percentage or volume wise. I have a set of each and am debating on which to install. I have the 7mm to 9mm adapter washers already for the smaller tips to be ran in the larger injector holes but I am not sure if the swap will be worth it. Any thoughts on this?

4 hole 40s are way to big for the fuel you are delivering. A good set of 5x16s or 18s would run very well in that setup.

Bear in mind that the tip size numbers that I am using are from the Deere Parts Catalog. The AR73100 is 4x0.40 or 4x0.36 as written in the catalog. The RE48480 is 7x0.255 as written in the catalog. These are not EDM's. Just factory nozzles. The 4 hole is from an 860B scraper and the 7 holes are from an 8870.

Well Nick, all I can suggest is to do is to do as you desire. I am guessing that the .36 and .255 are not referring to the hole sizes in the injectors, perhaps the whole tip diameter? Just sayin

Not sure what the attitude is about but I was simply stating where I was pulling the numbers from. Was not trying to be smart. The fact that InjPumpEd mentioned the metric conversion make much more sense. My main question is, which will flow more and roughly by what percentage. If the two nozzles are within 5 to 10% of each other, then I will not waste my time. The 500cc part is only theoretical as this is just an 11mm pump with the screw turned in 2 to 3 turns.

Just keep in mind, the larger the hole is, for every .001" you gain 3.14 times what you expect, but I'm no mathematician! So, the 7 X .010" is .070" total area, the 4 X .0157" is .0628". I personally think the 4 larger will outflow the 7 small. I think either one will be very close to the other though. To convert the metric to inch, just put in the .255 divided by 25.4.

Thanks InjPumpEd! That is the advice that I was looking for. Thanks again sir!

Here is a spreadsheet that shows hole size and number of holes, versus total flow area in inches, no guarantees.

He is referring to sizes that are metric, so the .255mm is about .010" and the .40mm is about .015", neither is enough for a 500cc pump imho, but this isn't the time of year to build pulling injectors lmfao!

Does the smaller hole size give a better spray to burn better? Atomization is a factor.

No attitude here Nick. I was only trying to help you out with recommendations for the 5x16 or 5x20s injpumped and i are on the same page as far as 500cc of fuel. Best of luck. Nick

Sorry Nick, 5x18s
