IH 686 trans with a 466??? August 20, 2022 01:50PM
How would a 686 work behind a DT466 as a puller for 8500 to 12500 3000rpm classes? What would be a better option? 706, 806, or what? Thanks

How much horsepower is the top of the class running?

686 is a terrible idea. Use a 706 and up rear for that

Right now I would say that we are in the 400 to 700hp range. These are "farm stock" classes. The horsepower will be in the 800 to 1000hp range very soon I would imagine. I think the 686 is way too small but I just happen to know where a complete one is for $2k. Probably either going to use the 856 that I already have or find a 706/806.

At the weight\s you're planning on running IMO would be tough on stock parts. Atlas Tractor can fix you up. I am running 656 rearend housing and transmission case in LLSS at a lot higher HP than you're planning on. I have all aftermarket parts in rearend and an Atlas Max transmission. If you're going to use small rearend spend the money right away and save having to redo it. Good luck

Would you hang 60 weights on it and run it regularly?

No I would not hang 60 weights. If I was building for that heavy of class, I would run large frame tractor. If I was using a 686 chassis, I would plan on never running heavier that 7000 lbs. As far as HP it is addictive. Build it once and build it right you will be money and time ahead IMO.
