Anyone have any thoughts on a 4020 rear end with a 5.9 cummins and an open driveline setup? Legal? Class? Just brainstorming late at night and was wondering if it's ever been done or seen before. |

Doesn’t fit
|
That wouldn’t fit any class rules other than a modified class. John Deere didn’t have a Cummins in them ever to my knowledge. Plus you couldn’t do open driveline concept due to most classes having a factory engine position rule. |

John Deere used to have Rotary Engine Division. They also had a deal to buy Detroit Diesel before it fell through. Maybe you could put one of those in it. |

Neither of those were ever in production. IH had a turbine division and a prototype turbine powered tractor but that doesn't make it legal in ANY tractor class other than Mods. It has to have been mass produce to be legal. At one point the NTPA had a rule that there had to be a certain number of vehicles produced to be a legal entry, I think it was something like 150 units if my memory is correct. Bigger Hammer

Lots of options, just need a bigger hammer.
Detroit: [www.tractordata.com] (only 86 built) [www.tractordata.com] (why not approve any 53 series?) [www.tractordata.com] [greenmagazine.com] Cummins [www.tractordata.com] (only 23 built) [www.tractordata.com] (only 28 built) [www.tractordata.com] [www.tractordata.com] [www.tractordata.com] Liebherr [www.fwi.co.uk] Lots of tractors are running 'approved" combine motors that were never offered in a tractor. Go for broke and drop in a 24L V12, might have to de-stroke it a bit to meet CI limits! |

The combine motors still swing a stock crank from a 2wd tractor motor. A JD466 out of a combine swings the same crank as a JD466 from a tractor. The IH guys can use 360, 466 truck blocks because they swing the stock cranks from tractors. Ford guys use a 474 from a truck but it can swing the stock 401 or 456 crank so its legal. I don't think you'll find ANY stock 2wd tractor cranks that fit/swing without modification in those big Cummins blocks so there for they aren't legal in anything other than Open Super. Could easily be done. Not sure it would be worth the effort. The John Deere 466, 7.6L or 8.1L cu. in. engine sould out preform the Cummins 5.9L, 6.7L or 8.3L engines. |

Crossed
|
ECIPA already has a tractor with a 4020 rear end, transmission with a 5.9 Cummins in their 360 hot stock class. And another John Deere with a DT 360. |

I remember the good old days when everyone was sure that nobody would cross dress tractors like that... Jake Morgan Owner, PULLOFF.COM Independent Pulling News This page is a free service.
