Actually a Deutz engine hooked to an Allison transmission.
ANY engine hooked to ANY transmission beats a pullback tractor any day.

How about what DOESN'T: Any member of any fair board in any new tractor!

A person that is easy on a clutch.
One with a Good tow strap. (not a dollar store one)
A person that pays attention.
I person that knows that not a pulling vehicles are the same and they all have different turning radius and ground clearance

We in NY have a top notch operator.
I would say he can take the place of 4 to 6 poor ones
and take the place of at least 2 good one.
This guy it at the end of the track and at any sign of needing a tow off he is ready to go.
He has been around enough that can even read a pulling tractor to be rescued off the track.
He very seldom if ever jerks the rope for a tow off. Easy on the clutch
If the puller has to get back to the track ASAP he gets it done.
He carries a rope, a chain and a push bar.
The front of his tractor is set up for pushing tractors on the trailers so he can look forward as he is pushing. Great for safety.
I have even seen him use his tractor for a high lift. Using his 3pt hitch on tractors with broken front ends.
He is a asset at every pull he is at.
His name is Rescue Ron with his JD.

Dustin and Tommy on the mule. The tow is always there and they know if they break it, they have to fix it. Otherwise, Norwalk Wi has a guy that has a JD 730 that is so smooth with the hand clutch

So are we talking tow back tractors like tow the SLED back to the starting line, or just TOW tractors?
A tow BACK tractor tows the sled back to the strating line, like some antique pulling groups still use.
If we are talking tow vehilces used to tow pulling vehicles around to scale, and off the end of the track and back to the haulers, then my favorite are the antique tractor guys.
The jeep people at Wisner, Neb. are top of the heap too!
Tow operators need to pay attention, and as was said above, realize some vehicles turn different than others, also don't tow too fast, but don't jack around.
Best tow vehicle to bring along,,, one of them diesel Kubota's with cab and A/C !!!!! Saw one of those towing two P/S tractors, and wasn't hardly straining to do it.
