timing issue April 18, 2023 05:36AM
Hi there, so we have a twd pulling truck. and we are struggling to find what degree the timing should be set at. the motor is a 540 big block chevy with a 1471 supercharger. any range at which it should be set at would be great!

28 - 36 degrees advance. 36 being max

What ignition system are you using? That matters a lot.

What heads are on it ?

It's a dump truck engine with a 14-71 blower.
It's going to blow up soon.
PPM has the best advice.
HEI ignition, Mallory Mag, MSD 12, MSD 44, doesn't matter.
You are hitting a whine glass with a sledge hammer.

First, it is recommended that you check your engine owner's manual for the manufacturer's recommendations regarding the ignition timing setting. This is usually stated in degrees to top dead center (BVM). Second, optimal ignition timing can depend on many factors, such as type of fuel, degree of load, altitude, and others. Because of this, I would recommend contacting professionals who can perform an engine diagnosis and determine the best ignition timing for your particular case.

Spinning

Now - seriously:
The "perfect" timing depends on many factors like: RPM range (= final ratio of your truck / cam / heads ), compression ratio, type of ignition, ...
Less is always safer.
