Winch size for trailer July 27, 2023 02:49AM
I am looking to put a winch inside an enclosed trailer. Wondering on size and manufacture that has been proven to work great. Will be winching in a 9,500lb and a 11,000lb tractors. Is a 15,000lb winch going to be strong enough? Is there any out there to for sure stay away from? Thanks in advance.

I have a 12K winch from Harbor Freight with the synthetic rope. I use a snatch block and have no problem pulling a 11,000 lb tractor onto the trailer. 15k should be no problem but I would still use a snatch block.

I also run a 12k winch (got it from Rural King) for my 11K lb tractor. I've weighted up to 12K and had no problem pulling it on my trailer with a snatch block. I connected it to one single group 31 (high amp) battery and have it connected to the trailer wiring harness so it'll charge off the truck while driving.

15k is more than enough. The rolling resistance of those tractors combined is likely less than 15k. I have never tried Harbor Freight but SuperWinch seems to be a decent value winch. I've always considered Warn Winches as my top choice but for a 15K one they are pretty expensive.

I have an 18K Synthetic Rope Super Winch and it works great. Cost is around $1300 compared to a 16.5 Warn SR at $3500
