Hello all I have a 4430 syncro range, I am considering bolting in a Quad range center section, I have been told bolts right in just need linkage and quad valve, and away we go, along with wanting to be able to shift between the gears with two speed, I am looking to gain ground speed, I have been told that 4440,4450, 4455 have a faster two speed in them than a 4430, I have a line on a 4050 two speed so question is is that as fast as the 4440,4450,4455 two speed???? any input is greatly appreciated thanks!!! |

there is no difference in ratio that I am aware of. the two speed will allow you to slow down whatever gear you are in by approximatley 27.5 percent. |

Bill please correct me if i am wrong, but I have been lead to believe that the 4440 quad or of that series, installed in a 4430 rear end, actually speeds it up be 20 percent???? |

All 30 series small frame row crop tractors and 4040, 4240,4050,4250,4055 and 4255 2 speeds are UNDER drive in the low side and DIRECT drive in the high side. The 4440, 4450 & 4455 2 speeds are DIRECT drive in the low side and OVER drive in the high side. So by installing a 4440,4450 or 4455 2 speed all gears will increase in speed by about 27%. To make a direct drive 2 speed an over drive 2 speed requires 2 different gears. The straight cut version of these gears are no longer available from JD, as they are subbed over to a complete helical cut gear carrier assy (RE12306) to the tune of $2150.00. I do not think this helical carrier is as desirable for high HP use. Also some changes were made in how the later 2 speed shift valve receives it oil, so just bolting in a later 2 speed in an early tractor will result in a 2 speed that will not shift. To have the strongest 2 speed possible, it takes parts from several different serial number range of tractors combined into one 2 speed. |

Some of the 4440's could of had the later helical gears put in them, so if you are calling around be sure you are getting the straight cut gears. An early 30 series 2 speed had more disks in the clutch and brake pack and by machining some off of the clutch and brake pistons another disk and separator plate can be added to each. The later 2 speeds had a better design where the planet carrier bolted to the clutch drum, six short cap screws instead of the three long rubber shanked cap screws. If you use a brake piston housing that has the port for the shift valve oil supply then you MUST use a clutch operating housing that has the corresponding port in it to feed the shift valve with pressurized oil or the 2 speed will not shift. If the clutch operating housing has the port and you do not need it, it is tapped and can be plugged with an 1/8" NPT plug. If you are using the stock shift linkage you also need to grind the weld off of the 2 speed shift shaft/lever and rotate the lever 180 degrees on the shaft and reweld or the hi & low will be backwards. When I put mine together 4 years ago I used parts from at least 3 different 2 speeds. I ran this set up 4 years with no problems at all. |

Can you give us a list of serial numbers and what is needed to do this? If we have to build one, we might as well harden it the best we can |

Hello, I was wondering if I could get some more info on this? A friend and me tried to put a quad out of a 4455 into a 4430 and it won't shift. What are the changes that need to be made to make it work? Give me a call if possible at 3302014726. Thank You, Ben |
