Deere questions, wanna go green January 19, 2010 11:48AM
A question for all you Deere guys: I'm a Moline guy, but my wife wants a Deere (nobody's perfect). Because I love her, I'm willing to sacrifice a MM for her Deere. She really wants a 4020 or at least that body style, we can call it a 4020. We intend to pull famstock with it, good chance we'll put a turbo on it. I know NOTHING about Deere's, except that they are green. Is there a certain tranny to look for? Engine? I've read where guys put a 466 into something, but I don't know what. Like most other classes, if it's oem and bolts up, we can run it. Is the 4020 a good tractor to make into a puller? I've heard they were great farm tractors. Any advice you guys have is much appreciated.

I know a local guy that pulls a narrow front N/A diesel 4020 and it has head work, pump work, and cam work done to it. He is extremely competitive in N/A classes and tough to beat. On the other hand, the same mods of his that I listed, along with an M & W turbo kit makes a really strong runner and would do great with slower mph farm blower classes.

Re: Deere questions, wanna go green January 19, 2010 12:06PM
We have also thought about the N/A class. Those narrow fronts look cool on those tractors, too. The N/A would be cheaper to run, I'm sure. It costs money to go fast......We may just stick to N/A, too. We're just in the planning stage here, so haven't really locked in a direction, but we know we need to. Thanks

The only thing bad about the 20 series tractors is the rearend, you cant shift on the go. But if u go to the 30 series you get the quad range and are able to shift which tends to be better in smaller horse power classes because the internationals have a torque they can use.

Re: Deere questions, wanna go green January 19, 2010 03:51PM
It depends on your rules. Around here, some of the N/A classes have a 640 or 650 inch limit- you either gotta spend serious $ or get spanked. Local farm stock is good pump, good injectors, minor mods, and lots of cheap fun. The turbo farm stocks run faster and put on a better show, in my humble opinion.

Re: Deere questions, wanna go green January 19, 2010 01:19PM
A 4020 is a great tractor but it is rather hard to get a turbo under a stock hood. It is not impossible. It just takes a little work. Also a 4020 has a roosamaster injection pump which is not all that geat for pulling . This injection pump is driven off of the camshaft and has been known to break the camshaft in a pulling tractor. You can put a 466 in a 4020 but again it will take a little work. The 466 will have an inline injection pump which is better.

Re: Deere questions, wanna go green January 19, 2010 01:26PM
you could always go a BBJD like a 5020 or 6030. The 5020 has a 531 with a roosamaster pump. The 6030 carries a 619 with an inline pump.

Re: Deere questions, wanna go green January 19, 2010 01:29PM
A 6030 does not have a 619 stock. it has a 531 with an inline pump and the very early ones had a roosamaster just like a 5020.

Yeah I forgot about that. Guess I just had got used to them all having 619's. Well showed my @ss..lol. Oh well probaby wont be the last.

Re: Deere questions, wanna go green January 19, 2010 03:23PM
A 4020 would make a great tractor to start with but if I was to start over I would use a 4010 cheaper to buy and looks the same. I just built one last year but we run a HOT FARM Class I run a 8.1 crank 55 series head 3 speed tranny and all the good stuff if you have any questons send me a E-mail but just remember be ready to spend $$$ DONT WORRY ABOUT A TA LIKE IH'S HAVE YOUR SOPPOSED TO PUT THE TOURQE IN THE MOTOR NOT IN THE TRANNY!!!!!!!!!

Re: Deere questions, wanna go green January 20, 2010 02:11PM
How much trouble was it to put the 8.1 crank in a 466??? Thanks

Re: Deere questions, wanna go green January 20, 2010 12:13PM
I have a 4010 with a 466 and inline pump that am considering selling. Post your number if you would be interested and I'll give ya a call.

Re: Deere questions, wanna go green January 20, 2010 12:30PM
You can call until aout 8:30 or so central time @ 262-483-8317. I have a MM 585 engine being set up for pulling that has to go, so if anyone would be interested in buying or a trade would be good too. Have a bunch of impossible to find goodies, all you need is a set of pistons to be at 640 CID with it. Any questions let me know. We're set on the 4010/4020. The 6030 is just too big for where I want to be right now. If I had one, I'd want to take it up to prostock, and I can't afford it! We're going brush pulling with it, and more and more of those are speed limit classes, so the rules are a little gray there. Since I know nothing about Deeres, I was just wondering about rearend/tranny issues or anything like that. Thanks!

not to jump on the bandwagon...i also have a 4010 i am looking to get rid of....completely ready to go and pull farm stock turbo or mph...runs 7500 and up (could easily make 7000)466,steel flywheel w/4320 sized clutch, working pto and hydraulics, factory radiator, hyd pump, etc...,awesome set of 18.4x38 old style 23degree radials @35%, never ran over 3300rpm, runs 6th gear in a 10,500 farm stock class and spins out on the best ohio tracks...located north central ohio...330-607-5053

I have a 4320 that we run stock and hot stock. It's very competitve and comes stock with a turbo. I am running it with the stock 404 at 3000rpms.
Still running a jcb rotary pump from CDS. I did have the clutch beefed up and it has around 100 hooks with no problems. Forget about shifting on the go with a Quad or power shift. I pull against a 4255 with the inline pump and 466. He should trounce me but if he shifts at the wrong time I get him. If he does beat me it's only by a couple feet at the most. I can run 7th in 8500,9500 and use 6th for 10000 and 12000. A 6030 or 5020 is just so heavy to start with and there is always controversy with them. Get a 4320 or 4430 and have fun without big bucks.Good luck!!!!!

Re: Deere questions, wanna go green January 21, 2010 11:30AM
It was pretty easy to put a 8.1 crank in a 466 just turn the mains down 1/2 inch

Re: Deere questions, wanna go green January 21, 2010 12:20PM
doesnt turnning the mains down that much take the hardness out of the crank or is there a way to reharden it. Also what cubic inch does that make 466

Re: Deere questions, wanna go green January 21, 2010 01:30PM
It does take some hardness out of the crank but they can check the hardness after they turn it down. It makes 496 c.i.

Re: Deere questions, wanna go green January 21, 2010 01:49PM
what if it is not hard enouph after buying a crank and paying for turnning it down can it be hardened?

Re: Deere questions, wanna go green January 21, 2010 02:03PM
From what I understand it could be hardend but if your going to do that I would talk to he machine shop that your going to have do it. But just remember you will need to use a block that uses a crank driven oil pump
