Pyrometer placement

Wanting to put a pyrometer on my 3000 rpm tractor, where should the probe go? Right before the turbo or right after? What should max heat be on the pyrometer and still have the engine live? Thanks. |

Put it at the inlet to your charger. most accurate reading is there. 1550 to 1600 tops. you'll know when its too hot. |

I am curious as to suggestions. I farm with mine and run 1000-1100 While chopping and 1100-1400 while Plowing. Giving a turn at the pump for the occasional pull and I peg the 1500 meter. Ideas for cooler with out water? Would replacing the stock T04 be a good idea? Thanks |

As far as cooloing it down without water, if you have a big enough pump you can turn up the fuel and actually cool it off. It won't run quite as well, but it will run longer. Guess you never said what you are running, but almost anything would give more hp than a stock t-04. Pretty easy to find a holset. HX-50 is pretty reliable.
Concerning burning the probe off and sending it though the exhaust, if that happens, its gonna be the least of your problems. you've melted a piston or two by then. |

Running a 78 JD 4440 with stock pump and engine. Was considering a 3LM-466, but would the HX-50 be a better idea? |

We ran our 4440 one time with a T-04 made it to about 260' and that was the end of it! Put a 3lm on and its still on 15 years later. |

Well My 4440 dynos around 220 until i turn it up for the occasional pull. Any idea what temp you are running? Did you go with the 3LM-466 and change the exhaust manifold or just with the 3LM-33 and stay with the old manifold? |

What about burning the pryo probe off and going through the turbo? |

that is not going to happen. if you were to get it that hot there would be holes in the pistons. i have had our tractor hit 2250 on the track and i am still using the same pyro. |
