501 vs 466 vs 550 February 09, 2010 02:38PM
I am looking to build an IH Naturally Aspirated tractor, as the class currently is dominated by green, with a couple off-colors thrown in. My initial thought was an RD-501 into an 806, but my hesitation is that gas tractors are sometimes restricted due to a couple cheaters. (can you really call them cheaters?) Anyhow, the next logical engine is the 466, as it is readily available, and easily modify-able. But the budget really doesn't allow for full-blown mods, so likely a cam and pump work would be all that I do. That brings up the next possibily- the DV-550, aka 9.0. I know literally nothing about hot-rodding one, but I assume pump work would be all that I could justify. Being a V-8 would make it lug less on the low end. Has anyone pulled one of these against a basic 466? thanks for any advice. Just trying to get some red representation!

on you tube there is some vids of na tractors, looks like 10,000 or heavier.i think they are from ind or ill.there are some v8 mfs,ol,and ih.there is a few links from there to some of thier other pulls.

we have 2 trucks here on the farm, one with a 466 one with a 9.0.the 466 will run circles around the 9 with the same load but the 466 does have a turbo and bottom end torque seems better on the 466.the 9 will blow the left head gasket every so often.head and block checked ok,but just a charecteristic so ive been told.parts are getting kinda hard to find for the 9 around here.my humble opinion would be go with a 466

Re: 501 vs 466 vs 550..class rules ? February 10, 2010 06:54AM
What are the engine rules for where you are planning to pull ? Wondering what makes a "cheater" in this class .

John Raymond pulled a successful 1468. He builds engines of literally any color for any class and horsepower, I believe. 585-538-9455. Remember, torque is what pulls you through as far as possible, especially in the lower horsepower classes.

The rules??? lol, if they had stone-set rules, then I would tell you! That is why I said, "can we really call them cheaters?" When someone is winning because they have big bucks stuck in an engine, someone is gonna whine....
I know torque is king, that is my hesitation on the 9.0, though I think it would have the most power "out of the box", without much tweeking. Plus I know where there is an engine sitting with all the adapters to put it right in. Making an 806 gasser would be easiest, because that is what I have to start with. But sheet metal can be swapped. Decisions, decisions....

if its got to be n/a,tho im not a mm guy,a hd 800 sounds like a good place to start.im assuming gas is legal since you mentioned the rd-501.

I think the rd 501 na makes 214 hp stock. If you do not want to do many mods this kind of power will be hard for a dt in stock na form to match.
You might get around 200 but you will have to spend some $ to go much higher. The rd however should make 250+ just by turning more rpm's and doing a little to the head. I know Floyd Isabell makes a kit to instal the rd in a 560 including the clutch and everything.

Well, without a set of rules can you really cheat ? A 466 converted to spark plugs would be my suggestion. Greatest number of used parts

making it less expensive and more flexible should the rules make your set up illegal. Good luck and have fun.
